Tournament seeds Juan Martin Del Potro and Marcos Baghdatis are set to begin their LA campaigns on Wednesday, as they take to the court against respective opponents Yen-Hsun Lu and James Blake.
(2) Juan Martin Del Potro vs. James Blake
World No. 19 Juan Martin Del Potro looks to break a 1-1 series tie with James Blake Wednesday night. The two last met at the 2010 Australian Open, where the Argentine sealed a victory in five sets.
Del Potro returns to competition following a successful Davis Cup effort against Kazakhstan. The 22-year-old, who won the Los Angeles title in 2008, has built a 35-9 record this season.
World No. 90 Blake defeated Michael Berrer in the opening round, 6-2, 6-3. The 31-year-old veteran is bidding for his 10th victory of the year.
(3) Marcos Baghdatis vs. Yen-Hsun Lu
Third seed Marcos Baghdatis holds a 1-0 lifetime edge against second-round opponent Yen-Hsun Lu. The Cypriot won their only previous meeting at the 2009 tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
Baghdatis is a modest 16-15 for the season, after winning two singles rubbers during a Davis Cup tie with Bulgaria. The 26-year-old reached the 2010 Los Angeles quarterfinal, before falling to Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets.
World No. 76 Lu commenced the tournament with a straight-set victory against American wildcard Robby Ginepri. The 27-year-old is 10-16 for the 2011 season.
