Nicolas Almagro and Stanislas Wawrinka fill the top two seed spots in Gstaad as the clay season winds to a close in Switzerland.
The European players are wringing out the last few weeks on the continent before heading to the States for the summer hard court swing, which will culminate at the US Open.
For now, however, players can still slide around on the red clay. The Credit Agricole Suisse Open in Gstaad, Switzerland will play host to many of the players that just competed in Hamburg, Germany, where Gilles Simon took the title.
Nicolas Almagro, who made an appearance in the finals in Hamburg on Sunday, headlines the field in Gstaad, with Switzerland’s own Stanislas Wawrinka, Mikhail Youzhny and Fernando Verdasco rounding out the top 4.
Results in Gstaad could be a bit surprising. All of the top seeds except Wawrinka made a deep run in Hamburg and could be feeling fatigue. Look for Wawrinka to delight his countrymen with a good showing here.

Wawrinka has always run hot and cold. He's either quite good or utterly dreadful.

I don't fully understand why there are still clay court events and we're into the 2nd week of the U.S. Open Series. I think this is part of the reason why the U.S. Open Series isn't taken more seriously.

Gstaad and Umag aren't good enough to overshadow anything that happens in the U.S. Open Series; even a small one like Los Angeles

Agreed. This is just an excuse for European players to stay in Europe a few weeks longer. LA definitely has the best field this week.

Since bowing out of Wimbledon in straights to Simone Bolelli I've lost all faith in Wawrinka.
