  • Hamburg - Almagro, Simon collide in championship match

    7/24/11 12:31 AM | Kelli DeMario
Hamburg - Almagro, Simon collide in championship match Third seed Nicolas Almagro will attempt to captured a fourth clay-court title, as he takes to the court against fifth seed Gilles Simon. The players are slated to compete for the Hamburg crown Sunday afternoon.

World No. 14 Nicolas Almagro looks to break a 1-1 series tie with finals opponent Gilles Simon on Sunday. The Spaniard leads 1-0 on clay, after winning a 2006 championship battle in Valencia.

Almagro advanced to the last match by virtue of his 6-4, 6-1 victory against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco. The 25-year-old is bidding for his fourth title this season, having put together championship winning runs in Costa Do Sauipe, Buenos Aires and Nice.

World No. 18 Gilles Simon rallied to oust fourth seed Mikhail Youzhny in the semifinal. The 26-year-old Frenchman will attempt to take his second ATP World Tour title this season, adding to a previous successful effort in Sydney.

    Prediction: Almagro in straight sets.

I think it may go to three sets. Though Almagro has the fire power, he sometimes lacks the patience in dealing with players like Simon, who is able to return many many balls. Frankly I think nobody likes playing against Simon. I know Fed and Nole don't like playing against Simon. I think Rafa and Murray don't mind Simon as they have all the patience in the world to deal with Simon.

Almagro has such a solid and beautiful SHBH, it's truly a weapon. Most likely Almagro will beat Simon here and I think with 500 points gained, he should be back to the top ten.

Yes Simon wins his first ATP500 title! Well done, and he's back into the top ten now! He's certainly not an easy opponent for anyone. His baby son looks like him, those big eyes!

expected one. Way to take care of business, Gilles.

Simon won't be in top ten, Almagro will be at no.ten and Simon at no. eleven. Still a big jump for Simon, Almargro too. Well done to both!

i tried to tell everyone at the start of the season to get on the bandwagon, and nobody would listen....

RickyDimon , 7/24/11 6:11 PM

I'm on the bandwagon all along, since 2008. I was disappointed when Simon had his injury in 2009. All seems well now, even though I still think Simon played better in 2008, I think he's a lot quicker then. 2008 seemed to be a good year for a few players: Rafa, Simon, Murray, Tsonga, Nole, Delpo.

And I always was too, Ricky!
