Fourth seed Mikhail Youzhny looks to reach the Hamburg final, as he squares off against familiar opponent Gilles Simon. The players are set to contest their 9th meeting early Saturday.
World No. 17 Mikhail Youzhny holds a commanding 7-1 series advantage against fifth seed Gilles Simon. The two last met in Dubai, where the Frenchman won his first match over the Russian. Saturday marks their first clash on clay.
Youzhny advanced to the last four with a three-set victory over 12th seed Marin Cilic. The 29-year-old saved two match points, en route to a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) victory on Friday. He is bidding for his first championship final berth of the season.
World No. 18 Gilles Simon defeated fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils in the quarterfinal, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0. The 26-year-old will attempt to make his first final since January, when he captured the title in Sydney.
Prediction: A first-time match on clay should be very close- Simon in three sets.

Good call Kelli, Simon really came through in three sets. To be fair, Youzhny did look tired after the first set, that's the price he had to pay for spending three hours on the tennis court the previous day. In fact Youzhny was lucky to come through that match after facing match points and a lucky net cord saved him and won him the match. Well one can't be lucky all the time.
Well done Simon. Good play and good match.

expected one. Simon only wins the tournaments in which I don't predict him to do well.

When Simon lost serve for a second time to 2-4 in the first...I thought I was going to be wrong. Kind of a surprise to see Youzhny trailing 0-4 in the third though- almost looked like he was ill or injured? He was definitely off.

Simon will wear you down by refusing to miss a single ball

I hope Simon wins in three sets too. Simon is another unique player whom I like, after Rafa and Dolgo. He doesn't seem to have any major weapons but his best asset is his good tennis brain. He's so good in timing his shots and can just hold on a split second more before deciding where to place his shots. He also has some deft touches at the net as this match shows. To me Simon needs to play against aggressive or attacking players to make his matches interesting. His matches against counter punching players like himself can be very boring, like his match against Monfils yesterday, some overly long 61 shots rallies can really make people fall asleep.
To me Simon was at his best in 2008, beating Fed and Rafa then. It really can be frustrating to play against Simon, as Nole had shown during his match against him at Shanghai 2009. I remember some of Nole's fans had called Simon a nuisance on the tennis court.
