Two Americans at different ends of their career paths will meet in Atlanta on Saturday as Mardy Fish and Ryan Harrison are set to clash. The winner will advance to the final for a date with either John Isner or Gilles Muller.
Saturday's night match at the Atlanta Tennis Championships will feature the United States' No. 1 player against the guy whom many think will be its No. 1 player for year's to come.
Defending champion Mardy Fish and fast-rising Ryan Harrison will go head-to-head for the first time in their careers in Atlanta's second semifinal. While Fish is one win away from his 18th career ATP final and bidding for his sixth title, Harrison will be competing in his first-ever semifinal at the highest level.
Harrison has done it the hard way to ensure the best week of his ATP career. Although he did not have to qualify for the main draw (as he successfully did at all three of this year's Grand Slams), the 19-year-old has battled back from a set down twice. After easing past Yuichi Sugita, Harrison upset Xavier Malisse 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 then saved one match point and outlasted Rajeev Ram 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5).
Fish's quest for a second straight title at this event has gone exactly according to plan so far. The top seed and world No. 9 dismissed Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday before beating Somdev Devvarman 6-3, 6-4 during quarterfinal action. Fish, recovering nicely from two Davis Cup singles losses to Spain, is a solid 24-14 for his 2011 campaign.
Harrison cannot be discounted even though the pressure of his first semifinal will be considerable. The underdog has just about every shot in the business and he could be firing on all cylinders with the confidence from having overcome a pair of veterans in Malisse and Ram. Still, Fish is a force to be reckoned with in Atlanta and his experience should lead to an entertaining two-set victory.
