No. 2 seed Jurgen Melzer joins the rest of the top 4 seeds in the round of 16, as players vie for spots in the quarterfinal.
Jurgen Melzer vs. Fabio Fognini
Austria’s Jurgen Melzer hasn’t had a great spring and summer so far this year. His start to the clay season was outstanding, with a semifinal showing in Monte Carlo and a quarterfinal result in Barcelona, but since then the Austrian has struggled to win more than a match at a time at any tournament.
Fabio Fognini had a terrible clay court swing, but out of nowhere, the Italian made the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. Fognini is ranked 38 in the world, but on clay, he can be dangerous to just about anyone when he’s playing well. Melzer won their only other meeting last year in Auckland in 3 tight sets.
Prediction – Melzer for the win in 3.
Fernando Verdasco vs. Cedrik-Marcel Stebe
German wildcard Cedrik-Marcel Stebe has an impressive list of victims in Hamburg so far. The German dispatched Stuttgart champion Juan Carlos Ferrero in the first round and Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the second. Stebe now has Fernando Verdasco in his sights.
Verdasco is ranked 22 in the world, with recent results all over the board. He had a quarterfinal showing at Queen’s Club, but lost in the second round of Wimbledon.
Stebe is on a roll and he’ll have the backing of the home crowd, but Verdasco should have enough to get into the quarterfinals.
