Fernando Verdasco and Nikolay Davydenko will take the court for the first time in Hamburg as the second round gets underway.
Fernando Verdasco vs. Pablo Andujar
World No. 22 Fernando Verdasco will take on countryman Pablo Andujar in his opening match in Hamburg. The two men have met on 2 other occasions, with the players splitting the wins. Their last match came just this year back in March at the Miami Masters. Andujar won in 3 tough sets.
The surface should favor Andujar. Verdasco, though Spanish, generally performs better on quicker surfaces. He had a good result in Estoril this year, but his clay court season was otherwise unimpressive. Conversely, Andujar comes into Hamburg off an impressive run to the Stuttgart final, where he lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero. Prediction – Andujar for the upset.
Nikolay Davydenko vs. Cedrik-Marcel Stebe
Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, the German wildcard, got into the second round this week with a win over Stuttgart champion Juan Carlos Ferrero. As luck would have it, Stebe is the player that Davydenko lost to last week in Stuttgart. The Russian has won one match in his last 3 tries, with the win coming at Roland Garros over Denis Gremelmayr.
Davydenko might again be ripe for upset. Stebe seems to be on something of a roll, especially after dispatching Ferrero.
