Tournament seeds Gilles Simon and Alexandr Dolgopolov will begin their campaigns in Hamburg, as they take to the court against respective opponents Sergiy Stakhovsky and Jarkko Nieminen.
(5) Gilles Simon vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky
World No. 18 Gilles Simon leads Sergiy Stakhovsky 2-0 in the series, having won their last match at the 2010 tournament in Valencia. Tuesday marks their first meeting on clay.
Simon looks to regroup after suffering an early exit at the Mercedes Cup last week. The 26-year-old Frenchman fell to Albert Montanes in the opening round, 6-4, 6-7(5), 2-6. He enters into Hamburg with a 25-17 record, aided by a title-winning run in Sydney.
World No. 45 Sergiy Stakhovsky won his first-round match over Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina, 6-2, 6-3. The 25-year-old is bidding for consecutive match wins for the first time since Roland Garros.
Prediction: Simon in straight sets.
(10) Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. Jarkko Nieminen
Tenth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov trails Jarkko Nieminen 0-1 lifetime, after losing a clay-court final in Morocco last season.
Dolgopolov returns to action following a disappointing grass-court season, where he lost back-to-back first-round matches in Eastbourne and Wimbledon. The 22-year-old is 22-17 for the season, heading into his second Hamburg tournament.
World No. 55 Jarkko Nieminen won his 10th match of the year, after taking out Santiago Giraldo in the opening round. The 29-year-old veteran will attempt to win consecutive matches for the first time since Rome.
Prediction: Dolgopolov in three sets.
