(4) Gilles Simon vs. Albert Montanes
World No. 18 Gilles Simon holds a 3-1 lifetime edge against defending champion Albert Montanes. The players last met earlier this season in Monte-Carlo, where the Frenchman recorded a victory in straight sets.
Simon enters into the tournament with a 25-16 season record. The 26-year-old has a title in hand this season, having put together a championship run in Sydney. Simon will be making his fifth appearance in Stuttgart, looking to win consecutive matches for the first time since 2005.
World No. 40 Albert Montanes is a modest 15-15 for the year. The 30-year-old veteran will attempt to rebound after a first-round loss to Andreas Seppi at Wimbledon. The Spaniard has made the quarterfinal or better in three clay-court events this season.
(8) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez vs. Radek Stepanek
World No. 37 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez trails first-round opponent Radek Stepanek 0-1 in the series, having lost their only meeting at the 2009 tournament in Barcelona.
Garcia-Lopez is 15-17 for the 2011 season. The 28-year-old Spaniard is contesting his fourth Mercedes Cup, having compiled a 1-3 record beginning in 2007.
World No. 57 Radek Stepanek looks to regroup following an opening-round defeat to Fernando Verdasco at Wimbledon. The 32-year-old Czech returns to the Mercedes Cup for the first time since 2004, when he made the final eight.
