Runner-up France will begin its quest for a semifinal berth on Friday, as singles selections Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet face Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer.
Gael Monfils vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber
World No. 7 Gael Monfils holds a 3-1 series lead against Philipp Kohlschreiber. The Frenchman was 3-0 over his opponent, until the German won their last meeting at the 2011 Gerry Weber Open.
Monfils is 18-7 for the season, as he begins his sixth tie for 2010 finalist France. The 24-year-old, who made the quarterfinal in Barcelona and Roland Garros, has built a 4-2 Davis Cup record since 2005.
World No. 42 Philipp Kohlschreiber is 20-15 for the 2011 season, aided by a title-winning run in Halle. The 27-year-old is 11-7 in Davis Cup competition, set to contest his 10th tie for Germany.
Richard Gasquet vs. Florian Mayer
World No. 11 Richard Gasquet looks to break a 1-1 series tie with Florian Mayer early Friday. The two are meeting for the first time since 2007, when the Frenchman recorded a straight-set victory in Adelaide.
Gasquet enters his 9th Davis Cup tie with a 26-13 record. The 25-year-old returns to competition after making the round of 16 at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He is 5-5 in Davis Cup singles play since 2005.
World No. 20 Florian Mayer will be contesting his sixth tie for host nation Germany. The 27-year-old has compiled a 30-16 mark, with quarterfinal or better berths booked in seven tournaments this year.
