Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will take the court in Monte Carlo on Monday.
Richard Gasquet vs. Denis Istomin
Richard Gasquet has had some difficulty playing in front of French crowds, but the Frenchman is in good form coming into the European clay court season. With a semifinal showing in Dubai and run to the quarters in Indian Wells, he stands a good chance at making a run in Monte Carlo. His first opponent is Denis Istomin, the world No. 53 from Uzbekistan.
Gasquet had a straight-set win over Istomin last year at the Australian Open. Given the Frenchman’s level of play recently, he should move fairly easily into the second round.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Juan Monaco
This looks on paper like a tricky first-round match for France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Monaco is an Argentine clay-courter ranked 37 in the world, but he has been in dismal form in 2011. A couple of quarterfinal showings during the South American clay court swing are the best of the season so far for Monaco.
Tsonga has a clay court win over Monaco in the 2009 French Open. The Frenchman is finally finding his form after an injury layoff. Clay is not his favored surface, but the crowd should give him a boost here.
