  • Cilic, Davydenko take the court in Monte-Carlo

    4/11/11 6:48 AM | Ricky Dimon
Cilic, Davydenko take the court in Monte-Carlo Marin Cilic and Nikolay Davydenko will contest their Monte-Carlo openers on Monday. They are set for meetings with Filippo Volandri and Robin Haase, respectively.

    (15) Marin Cilic vs. Filippo Volandri

Cilic and Volandri will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they do battle in the opening round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Monday. While this does not appear to be an even matchup on paper, clay could end up being the great equalizer. Volandri does his best--and only--work on the slow stuff and he has already done well this week to qualify for the main draw. The 76th-ranked Italian eased past Yuri Schukin and Peter Luczak to earn his spot in the tournament.

Although Cilic would much prefer a faster surface for this one, he is no slouch on clay. The 6'6'' Croat reached the Munich final last season and made it to the French Open fourth round. Cilic is a mediocre 13-7 for his 2011 campaign, but he still registers at No. 22 in the world. Volandri should be competitive thanks to the surface, but the underdog generally struggles against the top players. Look for Cilic to advance in a pair of tight sets.

    Nikolay Davydenko vs. Robin Haase

Davydenko and Haase will also be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they clash in Monte-Carlo on Monday. Both men have been plagued by injuries and are thus ranked lower than their respective talents should warrant. Haase, though, is working his way back from several years of frustration and registers at No. 63 in the world.

The Dutchman is a mediocre 6-8 for the season, while Davydenko comes in with a disappointing 6-7 mark. Davydenko finished runner-up to Roger Federer in Doha to begin his year, but he has struggled since and won just a single match in Indian Wells and Miami combined. However, clay should negate Haase's serve in this one and the 41st-ranked Russian will likely play his way into plenty of baseline rallies. As a result, Davydenko in three sets is the pick.
