A full day of Monte-Carlo action will take place on Monday and it includes a matchup between Philipp Kohlschreiber and Andrey Golubev. The winner will go up against Roger Federer in round two.
Philipp Kohlschreiber and Andrey Golubev will be squaring off for first time in their careers when they meet in the first round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Sunday.
Both players have been in relatively lackluster form this season, although Kohlschreiber's woes have been due in part to difficult draws. The 34th-ranked German really has no bad losses in 2011, but he had the misfortune of facing Juan Martin Del Potro early in both Indian Wells and Miami. Kohlschreiber is 9-8 for the year and that includes a quarterfinal appearance in Auckland, where he fell to David Ferrer in three sets.
Golubev has been abysmal at ATP events this season, compiling a 2-6 record in addition to a shocking first-round loss at a Challenger event. Salvaging his 2011 campaign up to this point, though, are two huge Davis Cup victories that helped Kazakhstan to a road upset of the Czech Republic. Golubev defeated both Jan Hajek and Tomas Berdych, thus he has a total of four wins for the year.
This one should be both entertaining and competitive, as it is an even matchup on paper and both men can be successful on clay. Kohlschreiber has recorded a combined five wins in the last two French Opens and Golubev went on a dream run to the Hamburg title last spring.
Count on a three-setter, with a slight edge going to Kohlschreiber.
