An in-form Kei Nishikori is set for a semifinal meeting with Pablo Cuevas at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Saturday. The winner will battle for the title against either Ivo Karlovic or wildcard Ryan Sweeting.
(6) Kei Nishikori vs. (7) Pablo Cuevas
Sixth seed Kei Nishikori is through to his second semifinal of the season, after recording a comfortable victory over top seed Mardy Fish late Friday. The 21-year-old has not surrendered a set in Houston, having upended both early-round opponents with little difficulty. With a victory on Saturday, Nishikori advances to his first final since 2008, when he put together a maiden title-winning run in Delray Beach.
World No. 66 Pablo Cuevas struggled during the quarterfinal, forced to rally to a three-set win against third seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Despite six losses of serve, the 25-year-old came through in two hours and 27 minutes, 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-3. He is bidding for his first ATP World Tour final.
Prediction: Nishikori in straight sets.
(Q) Ivo Karlovic vs. (WC ) Ryan Sweeting
Ivo Karlovic and Ryan Sweeting are set to contest their second meeting in 2011. The veteran leads 1-0 in the series, having won their only meeting earlier this season in San Jose.
Karlovic, currently ranked 174, came through an extended quarterfinal battle with fourth seed John Isner. The two tallied 47 aces through more than three hours, with the Croatian winning in three tie-break sets. Karlovic looks to make his first final since 2010 in Delray Beach.
World No. 93 Ryan Sweeting rallied to a three-set victory over Teymuraz Gabashvili in the quarterfinal. The 23-year-old American won his second three-set match of the week, having ousted 2010 finalist Sam Querrey in the round of 16. He remains on course to book his first ATP World Tour final on Saturday.
Prediction: Karlovic in three sets.
