Top seed Mardy Fish looks to reach the final four at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Friday, as he takes to the court against Kei Nishikori. The two are joined in action by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who meets Pablo Cuevas.
(1) Mardy Fish vs. (6) Kei Nishikori
World No. 11 Mardy Fish is bidding for his fourth semifinal of the season, after securing an opening-round victory over Albert Ramos, 6-3, 6-4. The 29-year-old veteran is 13-6 heading into the quarterfinal, having reached the Houston final eight in 2003, 2006 (champion) and 2008.
Sixth seed Kei Nishikori has won consecutive matches in straight sets, having downed qualifier Franco Skugor and Igor Andreev with little difficulty. The 21-year-old remains on course to make his second semifinal of the season.
Prediction: Nishikori in three sets.
(3) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez vs. (7) Pablo Cuevas
Third seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is through to the quarterfinal, by virtue of his 6-4, 6-1 victory over Somdev Devvarman. The 27-year-old Spaniard, looking to extend his second effort in Houston, is bidding for his second semifinal of the season (Zagreb).
Seventh seed Pablo Cuevas has not dropped a set through two rounds, having upended Ricardo Mello and wildcard James Blake to make the quarterfinal. The 25-year-old will attempt to secure his first semifinal berth in 2011 Friday afternoon.
Prediction: Cuevas in three sets.
