(1) Mardy Fish vs. Albert Ramos
Former Houston champion Mardy Fish makes his return to the event, having reached a career-high World No. 11. The 29-year-old veteran became the top-ranked American by virtue of his semifinal finish at the Sony Ericsson Open. He is 12-6 for the 2011, with additional semifinal berths booked in Memphis and Delray Beach.
World No. 113 Albert Ramos recorded his first victory in Houston with a 6-4, 7-5, opening-round win over Argentine Brian Dabul. The 23-year-old Spaniard will be looking to post back-to-back, Tour-level wins for the first time this season.
(6) Kei Nishikori vs. Igor Andreev
Sixth seed Kei Nishikori trails second-round opponent Igor Andreev 0-1 in the series, having lost their only previous meeting at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open. The two clashed in the opening round, where the Russian held on to win in three sets.
Nishikori returns to the US Men’s Clay Court Championship for the first time since 2008, remaining in search of his maiden victory. He is 9-6 for the year, entering the draw ranked World No. 61.
World No. 97 Igor Andreev came through the opening round with a straight-set win over veteran American Michael Russell. The 27-year-old continues to struggle on Tour, after reaching a career-high World No. 18 in 2008. He will be looking to win consecutive matches for the first time since late September 2010.
