Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will square off for the 23rd time in their careers when they meet in the Miami semifinals on Friday. The winner will go up against either Novak Djokovic or Mardy Fish.
Sony Ericsson Open attendees have Novak Djokovic to thank for their good fortune on Friday.
When Djokovic overtook Roger Federer for the No. 2 spot in the rankings last Monday, tennis fans immediately anticipated a possible Miami semifinal between Federer and Rafael Nadal. Now it is a reality.
Nadal and Federer will be going head-to-head for the 23rd time in their illustrious careers when they do battle in semifinal action. The Spaniard leads their head-to-head series 14-8, although Federer has won four of their seven hard-court clashes. They most recently faced each other for the title of the 2010 World Tour Finals, with the Swiss prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
While Djokovic is dominating the tour this season, Nadal and Federer are enjoying similarly respectable campaigns. Nadal has not won a title since last year's U.S. Open, but he owns an 18-3 record in 2011. The world No. 1 reached the Indian Wells final and so far in Miami he has taken out Kei Nishikori, Feliciano Lopez, Alexandr Dolgopolov, and Tomas Berdych, losing a single set to Berdych in the process.
Federer has one title to his credit in 2011, having defeated Nikolay Davydenko in the Doha final. The world No. 3 followed that up with a semifinal showing at the Australian Open (lost to Djokovic) and a semifinal performance in Indian Wells (lost to Djokovic again). Federer finds himself back in another semi following routine victories over Radek Stepanek, Juan Monaco, Olivier Rochus, and Gilles Simon.
"Obviously we have many memories from playing amazing matches against each other," Federer said of his friendly foe. "It's not even that unusual that we play each other in the semis, because it's happened at the World Tour finals back in Shanghai (2006 and 2007). I think it (will) be electric out there tomorrow night."
That's a gross understatement, because fans are starved for Nadal vs. Federer. It happened only twice last year and twice in 2009, plus they have not squared off in the United States since their first two meetings, both in Miami way back in 2004 and 2005.
Count on this one living up to all expectations, but a slightly slow hard court should give the edge to Nadal after three thrilling sets.

May the best man win... unfortunately for Fed, I think it's going to the world no.1. Rafa also has the best chance of stopping Djokovic's unbeaten streak this year. Fed does have a rare chance of upping his number on his H2H against Nadal and avenging for his 3 straight losses to Djokovic... but a little too much to ask I think.
cable , 4/1/11 5:01 AM
After seeing Rafa tough out a win against Berdych tonight, I don't think he will be stopped tomorrow. I say he gets the win over Fed in three sets.
Bring it on!
Nativenewyorker , 4/1/11 5:21 AM
If federer serves well, he will have a great chance of winning. This one should be a barnburner.
tj600 , 4/1/11 5:41 AM
It was in Miami in 2004, when Rafa and Fed met for the first time. Then 17 years old Rafa defeated Fed in round of 32 (6-3, 6-3). It's time to repeat the victory.
Augustina08 , 4/1/11 5:42 AM
Hi Ricky..When exactly is this match being played? How much rest will Rafa get after his 2.5 hour clash today. I hope that doesnt become an issue. It was clearly the issue after his 3 hour slugfest with Murray in the ATP World tour semi and he got hardly any recovery time
sanju , 4/1/11 7:32 AM
7 PM Eastern
so he will have 21 hours of rest
RickyDimon , 4/1/11 8:17 AM
I don't think rest will be an issue here, given the fantastic athlete that Nadal is. However, if he serves inconsistently, I think Federer will pull this out in three blazing sets!
DanyalRasool , 4/1/11 9:00 AM
Nadal is stamina man and he has enough recovery time so i don't think it will be much of a factor.Still , I got Federer in 3 as my pick 6-4 3-6 6-3.The same pick I made before start of the tournament.
Ice , 4/1/11 9:01 AM
Who ever may win, we can see a awesome match today.
VENOM123 , 4/1/11 9:14 AM
The match wasn't a slugfest, like the match with Murray at last year's WTF. That one went for at least three hours, maybe longer. There were a lot of very long, intense rallies and it was grueling. This match wasn't like that at all. The first set was over very quickly, there was the one break of serve in the second set and then Rafa got the break at 4-3 in the third set to be able to serve it out.
I am sure Rafa would have preferred a straight set match that ended quickly, but I think he will be fine.
Nativenewyorker , 4/1/11 9:24 AM
"While Djokovic is dominating the tour this season, Nadal and Federer are enjoying similarly respectable campaigns. Nadal has not won a title since last year's U.S. Open, but he owns an 18-3 record in 2011. "
@Ricky Rafa did win the Rakuten Japan Open after USO 2011....
Anyway i think Rafa's gonna win in 2nd set tiebreak..
jaskarans , 4/1/11 9:37 AM
Folks any idea if the IW Semis and Final was played on Sat/Sunday, why are they rushing the Miami Semi on a Friday night itself ? When i the Miami final? SAt night or Sunday night?
sanju , 4/1/11 10:45 AM
Anyone who saw this match against Berdych, read the below line in a report. Anything to worry about? The injuries excessive love for Rafa scares me (:-
Nadal took an early lead against Berdych, then required treatment from a trainer. Nadal said he injured a nerve in his right arm, and pain ran up his shoulder to his neck and made him dizzy.
"Really strange," he said. "I was thinking too much about the arm, and I lost a little bit the concentration."
sanju , 4/1/11 10:53 AM
Sanju, WRT to concern for Rafa's injuries, a friend brought something up I hadn't even considered.
Apparently Rafa was out playing golf, as he frequently does, on his day off, instead of taking a full day of rest. Now we fans know he does that a lot to relax his mind, but Roger was once quoted as saying he'd love to play golf but isn't going to take it up till after he retires, because he'd found it stressed his body in unexpected ways.
It hadn't even occurred to me before this, but as much golf as Rafa plays for someone who isn't even a pro -- he plays with Sergio Garcia when he comes to town, for goodness sake -- coupled with his sudden inexplicable lapses like this one in the 2nd set, and against Nole in the IW final ... well, I'm wondering if the amount of golf he plays during tournaments is something he and his team might want to consider.
What do you think?
"That's a gross understatement, because fans are starved for Nadal vs. Federer. "
Yes. Yes, we are. Lucky, lucky Ricky!
mara002 , 4/1/11 1:06 PM
The same article follows with this about what happened after he won :
A jubilant Nadal threw his sweaty wristband into the stands right-handed -- an indication his shoulder wasn't too sore.
Hmmmm.....The excuse is in place before the match even starts just in case. Shame he couldn't even give Berdych credit for winning one set.
numero , 4/1/11 1:08 PM
What's shameful is the example shown by Roger last year not giving Berdy credit for beating him at Wimbledon...oh my back was hurting, oh my leg was missing, oh my ass was sore, etc, etc...
THAT'S shameful!
jean , 4/1/11 1:32 PM
I agree Roger shouldn't have said that. Guess they're in the same boat with this dislike of Berdych and failure to give him any credit.
numero , 4/1/11 1:49 PM
I wish Rafa wins the semi and the Miami tourney but why do I feel that given the recent lapses by Rafa, Roger might sneak out a win. Roger will be fresh too having had good 2 days of no sweat
sanju , 4/1/11 2:09 PM
numero, since I happen to be into sports myself, I can give you some useful tips: if you feel any sorts of pain produced by an injured nerve like this case is, once you take a PAIN KILLER you at some point stop feeling the pain...this is what Rafa did...it does not mean, though, that his nerve is cured...please, show some respect for the great players and great champions...they do not use excuses and take pain killers just in case...what an idiotic way of thinking and most of all so disrespectful...lol..
natashao , 4/1/11 2:24 PM
My oh my, you are in a spiteful mood today Numero. First you attack Simon unfairly for his retirement without being in full possession of the facts and now here you are slagging off Nadal without any justification whatsoever.
For Rafa to have 'congratulated' Berdych for taking a set off him as you suggest would have been truly insufferably patronising on his part and would have riled a bitterly disappointed Berdych no end.
I am not sure what you hoped to achieve with your comments but I would suggest you try practicising some good sportsmanship and refrain from the kind of cheap jibes we've seen from you today.
ed251137 , 4/1/11 2:29 PM
I'm taking Nadal in 3.
cherylmurray , 4/1/11 2:55 PM
Perhaps numero is spiteful towards all those who have positive H2H against Fed, or those who beat Fed regularly. I bet his next target will be Nole. Sad for numero, as he'll have to remain spiteful most of the time, now that more and more of the young guns are beginning to have Fed'a number. Next up after Nole will be Delpo.
luckystar , 4/1/11 2:59 PM
Hmmmm.....The excuse is in place before the match even starts just in case. Shame he couldn't even give Berdych credit for winning one set.
numero , 4/1/11 1:08 PM
Ok I See, numero you are judging Rafa by your own standards. Only people capable of deceit can think that of others.
Everyone knows that Rafa is instinctively right handed, that's why he probably takes a few more seconds between serves because he has to consciously think about using his left hand for that purpose. If you search on the internet, there is a video where they asked Rafa to do certain things like clean his teeth and write with his left hand and he was just as awkward doing it as any right handed person would be. He threw his headband with his instinctive hand.
If Rafa wanted to fake injury to his shoulder he wouldn't have gone for the right shoulder he would have gone for the left one because that's the one he plays with.

I was watching the Nadal/Berdych match
last night and once again I was blown
away by Nadal. It? s absolutely beyond belief to watch Rafael Nadal play tennis.
At times, you think he is going to go
down, like after the second set last night
but he doesn? t. The trainer came out to work on Nadal ? s shoulder at the end of the second set,
which Berdych had just won. Nadal? s face was in pain as they worked on him and
many of the fans were thinking he would
not continue to play. Are you kidding
me?!? He played with the heart of a lion
in the third set and his determination
was beyond description. If everyone in the sports and business
world competed with the genuine
attitude that Nadal did, the world would
be a better place! He absolutely refuses to
accept defeat!!
vrael , 4/1/11 3:56 PM

This is a testimonial coming from no less than Bollettieri! - It can't get any better.

Federer has been sick (chronic back problems) for many years, he has learnt to be careful. He also playes tennis carefully.
Augustina08 , 4/1/11 5:46 PM
numero's spiteful comments are typical of many Fed fans. May be Fed attracts such fans.
holdserve , 4/1/11 5:56 PM
"When I became the world No. 1, I didn't really have that rival, and I was very happy about it. I was just able to win, win, win...and dominate and go on and lose, you know, (just) ten matches in two years, (that) kind of thing. That was quite incredible. "So in the beginning, I guess, I struggled to embrace the rivalry I had with Rafa. Only later on I was able to say this is actually quite cool. Sleeveless, pirate pants, you name it, long hair, lefty, spins, more with the flat shots and so forth and double?handed against one?handed, lefty against righty. I think it all kind of made sense, and I was able to embrace it then..."

Guys what time in India is the Fed-Rafa match ? 5:30 AM IST?
sanju , 4/1/11 6:28 PM
"What I remember from seven years ago when I played him the first time (here, the third round), is that I came back from sun stroke in Indian Wells after beating Henman, and kind of dragged my way through the (second-round) match (here) with Davydenko. I don't know how much I had actually heard about Nadal before that match. "I remember seeing him for a bit over a year, I think, because he had a breakthrough maybe in Monaco the year before or somewhere else. I knew he was good, you know, but he, I guess, surprised me to some degree that he was so consistent, so good on hardcourts already so early. "That really showed me he was going to become a probably world No. 1, Grand Slam champion, just a really special Spaniard who could not only play on clay but other surfaces as well. He clearly lived up to all the expectations. From then on it went; the rest we know."

BTW Ricky Roger is hugely popular in India..He has hardcore fans in India..Rafa is very popular too but next to Roger..People have begun to like Rafa after watching his results from 2008..I think others (including Djoko) barely count or matter and dont evoke that much interest..
BTW the legendary Sachin Tendulkar is a huge Fed fan too and the Indian captain Dhoni is a huge Rafa fan :-)

No jean. you're shameful. you dwell on the negatives of misleading comments rather than the credits that federer gives. that's your problem. instead of relishing the fabulous rivalry between these two great players and the wonderful comments and friendship they have between each others, you choose to dwell on the past. What about rafa's injuries? retirements? comments? he is not so perfect. Nadal is world number 1. I dont think there is any federer fan who isn't aware of this, but we are pleased that roger is the second most consistent player this year and he is more positive about other players and says plenty of wonderful things about many players. After the wimbledon match and more recently he spoke about how great a player berdych was, why not mention that? yes, i forgot, you choose to harshly. yawn.

vrael , 4/1/11 7:39 PM
It's interesting that I read on another tennis site that the Fed fans are the ones talking about how this court is much slower, which favors Rafa. Of course, we all know that Fed fans never make excuses for him! Yeah, right! Already it's starting. I wonder how they will spin the fact that Rafa had to actually play his quarterfinal match instead of just playing three games before his opponent retired. So Fed is the one who will be more rested, yet we have to read Fed fans already trashing and insulting Rafa for having some kind of problem in his right shoulder in last night's match.
I watched my recording of that match and there was definitely something wrong with Rafa's right arm. He was shaking it and stretching and it and trying to flex it. Despite this, he only called out the trainer and didn't even take a MTO. Whatever it was, he played through it and got the win. If that isn't the sign of a champion, then I don't know what is.
Nativenewyorker , 4/1/11 8:33 PM
Maxi,
Roger is more polite now but till last year he was spiteful and ungracious especially toward Nadal. His resentment was magnified several times by the Federer fans here who have directed their hatred toward Nadal by accusing him of cheating, by trying to discount his achievements by claiming surfaces are slowed down or that he is 1-d and by simultaneously embracing two contradictory beliefs: Belief 1: All his injuries are excuses and Belief 2: All his injuries are serious and career threatening so he will retire soon ( maybe before Fed!). On this site there are only a few spiteful characters like numero but other sites are like nests of Fed fan vipers.
Now with the rise of Djokovic, Fed realizes how lucky he was that Nadal was so humble and never went around putting Fed down. Also, Fed is now declining and knows it. He has already achieved a lot and can rest on his laurels.
So he is now kind of feeling like a gracious elder statesman and does not feel that threatened any more by Nadal.
He may now be actually feeling fond of Nadal with whom he has shared so many great moments. But till last year, the friendliness and generosity was mainly from Nadal's side.
holdserve , 4/1/11 8:36 PM
well, a Nadal-Fed thread wouldn't be the shame without these frictions between fans, would it ? :)
Focusing on the match, I can make no predictions because I haven't seen Fed's form during this championship. Quite frankly, I haven't seen any of his matches.
I have seen some of Nadal's and he's far from his best, that's for sure. He has combined scarily good moments (like against Feli and Dolgo) with moments of doubt, like yesterday against Berdych.
I guess if Fed is as erratic as he's lately (for Fed's standards) we're going to see a match with more unforced errors from both sides than usual.
As always, good serving will be crucial.
Let's see how their backhands will work today because most of their shots are going to look for that side (as usual).
Vamos Rafa!
(Djoko harvested yet another 6-1 against Fish today, yikes!!!)
Shireling , 4/1/11 10:12 PM
Be brave and strong in the battle tonight, Rafa!

I feel bad for the Fed fans. Fed really didn't play as well as ought to, could potentially. (And Rafa had plenty of confidence and skill.)
But tonight I don't feel bad for Fed. I'm still not over the fact that he had the gall, seven years hence and right before this match to try to diminish his first defeat to a 17 year old Rafa by talking about heat stroke a week before. I don't think heat stroke affects you for a week. And even if he really believed back then that it affected him... he made it that far into the Miami tournament the next week, beat players who were supposed to be better than Rafa to meet him... and then met a fearless young player playing world class tennis. Why try and take anything away from the honour earned by Rafa that day.... seven years later. The very opposite of class, of honesty, of honour. Sorry about the rant :-) but that's what I was thinking while watching the match tonight.

Wow I put the alarm on at 5:50 AM IST assuming match would start at 5:30 and by the time players come on court, do warm up etc, match will start by 5:50. I was shocked to see the score 6-3, 4-1 :-).. Guess I got the time calculation wrng and match started at 4:30 instead of 5:30 AM IST, but I was spared of nervous anxious moments and end outcome great too :-)
In the last 4 games that I saw, it almost seemed Fed didnt even want to be on the court. He just wanted to run away and it was ugly pathetic display of tennis. Hoping for a nervebiting thriller on Sunday
Guys - Is Rafa-Novak the new eagerly anticipated rivalry going forth instead of Rafa - Fed? Truly change of guard?
sanju , 4/2/11 2:50 AM
Federer still has a chance on other surfaces. Just not on clay or slow hard.
he should still be a major factor on grass, fast hard, and indoors. In other words, after clay season he will be just fine.
RickyDimon , 4/2/11 2:54 AM
Fed has to search from within for motivation. He just seems to not even put up a fight these days. You can make that out by just seeing his face, its all morose and has zero enthusiasm ..The more he does that, the more difficult it will be to get his confidence back..It took Nadal too quiet a few months to get confidence back after the injuries and RG loss in 2009 and he went titleless for like 11 months. The tennis display in todays match and Dubai final against Djoko was both at the same level - ugly, not even competitive between such high ranked players
sanju , 4/2/11 2:56 AM
well done rafael....happy to be proven wrong...VAAAAAMOS
vrael , 4/2/11 2:58 AM
good luck with the elec eng exam!
and for India!
chlorostoma , 4/2/11 3:00 AM
federer usually gives excuses to the losses .......but not to the losses to nadal...he knows that nadal is better player than him...( u can check his transcripts of last interview ....from the 1st meeting itself federer felt that rafael is a great talent and he is going to be world no 1..he always gives credit to nadal).
chenna21 , 4/2/11 3:09 AM
Beautiful, sensational from Rafa tonight! Unbelievable serve...Rafa played such a great tennis tonight! Though I must admit Rafa was generously helped with lousy performance by Fed...just too many UEs from Fed tonight...
Anyway, so great to see Rafa win easily...he is ready for the finals! VAMOS RAFA!
p.s. I loved the part when Uncle Toni laughed at the love message the lady was holding...the whole Rafa's team was laughing and having fun...it feels nice to see their happy faces...
Thank you for this great victory, Rafa! VAMOS!!!

chenna,
yes and no. Roger so often does the giving compliments but just before or just after taking away much of what he says. Where was the grace in talking about the stroke heat from a week earlier. And I mean, not in the heat of the moment (pun intended) of an interview right after a shock defeat by a 17 year old. I mean 7 years later, after being crowned sportsman of the year multiple times, after being lambasted by journalists and fans worlwide for doing his barbs and diminishing of other players going on for years, you'd think he would have the grace at 29 not slide in that heat stroke comment.
chlorostoma , 4/2/11 3:19 AM
Listening to, or reading, Roger's pronouncements about his performances I always have the mental image of him lying awake at night discussing with Mirka what he will say in his next post match interview. Talking of Mirka, it is nearly always possible to predict the outcome of his matches by watching her face and body language. Last night she was chewing her finger nails or chomping furiously on her gum from the very outset.

everyone always overreacts whenever Federer loses a match, regardless of where or how
yes this one was especially discouraging for him, but he will be fine once the surface gets back in his favor. He won't be too much of a factor on clay, but the rest of the season is all ideal surfaces for him.
RickyDimon , 4/2/11 4:24 AM
@RickyDimon, 4/2/11 4:24 AM
Fedfans overreacts when Federer defeats Rafa. I remember their reaction after WTF, and actually that 'reaction' has lasted until now.
Augustina08 , 4/2/11 4:42 AM
Here's to hoping Nole beats Rafa in the final, and Sri Lanka win the CWC ;)
samprallica , 4/2/11 5:31 AM
Augustina,
Well said! We haven't heard the end of it, so this is our time to be joyous and celebrate a very convincing win from Rafa!
And here's to another win for Rafa in the final! :)
Nativenewyorker , 4/2/11 8:25 AM
yes samprallica,
That's all you have left now: just hope that Nadal loses against Nole.
Why don't you just go to anohter thread and rant about something else and let us enjoy this win by Fed?
Shireling , 4/2/11 8:32 AM
thanks chlorostoma.....paper went well.....now watching india bowl....they have been impressive so far
vrael , 4/2/11 12:01 PM
hope is all they have....keep hoping samprallica.
vrael , 4/2/11 12:05 PM
one of your hopes has been dashed to the ground samprallica.....the other will dissapear tomorrow....VAAAAMOS RAFA
vrael , 4/2/11 7:37 PM
That's all I have left now? I'm sorry, but my life is probably a lot better than yours - it doesn't depend solely on sports results.
As for vrael, ah well, what more can I expect? As a proud Sri Lankan, and an ardent Nole fan, I think I'm more than entitled to say what I did before. India won yesterday, fair and square - but we're gracious and proud of our boys even in defeat, they got a heroes welcome this morning. We don't have as much board power/money, didn't have the home advantage etc, and yet we ran you close enough. Need I remind you of what happened in 1996/2007?
samprallica , 4/3/11 4:19 PM
Yes India won!! It was so great to walk around London last night and see groups of people holding up the Indian flag :) vrael, *high five*
Samprallica: didn't know you were Sri Lankan, your captain was very gracious in defeat, which is always nice to see.
mriiidula , 4/3/11 6:12 PM
samprallica
i didnt know that you are from sri lanka...otherwise i would not have taunted you like that....i apologise
Sri lanka were very gracious indeed....they are a very talented side and i thought the match was over after malinga sent sehwag and sachin packing.....but we won in the end...i guess i should be a little more optimistic....:)
High five to you to mriidula...if your username is your real name....then i must assume you have indian connections...."mriidula" is sanskrit isnt it?
Cheers everyone....VAAAAMOS RAFA!!!
vrael , 4/3/11 6:44 PM
vrael - yes it is, but with just one 'i' haha. it means 'soft' in Sanskrit haha.
samprallica - at least you got one wish ;) celebrate!
mriiidula , 4/3/11 10:58 PM
Cheers, vrael, apology accepted.
Yes, mriidula - some consolation in the end. Cheers for the comments about our captain, we're all very proud of him and a little gutted he couldn't finish it off.
samprallica , 4/4/11 5:35 AM
mriidula
yes i know the meaning...studied sanskrit for 4 years...it was compulsary in school...5th grade to 8th...hated it....what's the need for future engineers to learn sanskrit??? I am going to learn spanish though....maybe french too...when i get time that is...
Congrats to nole fans...he is the UNDISPUTED no. 1 on hardcourts till now....
VAAAAMOS RAFA...go make your opponents eat dirt this clay season
