Tommy Robredo and Fabio Fognini will go head-to-head just three days after a controversial encounter at the Movistar Open. Robredo, who refused to shake hands with his opponent, beat Fognini and went on to win the Santiago title.
Fans will be paying to see a tennis match on Tuesday night in Costa do Sauipe, but they could get a whole lot more than that.
Tommy Robredo and Fabio Fognini will be squaring off for the second time in four days when they do battle in the first round of the Brasil Open. To say their last encounter was a contentious one would be an understatement.
Robredo prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at last week's Movistar Open in a match that will be remembered far more for the controversy than for either the quality or the end result. Fognini became upset as his opponent would get visibly enthused over his unforced errors. The Italian held nothing back for Robredo, hurling expletive-laced insults at the Spaniard. Robredo, who went on to win the Santiago title, refused to shake hands after the match even when Fognini made repeated attempts to shake.
Overall, Robredo leads the head-to-head series 2-0. He won a 2009 meeting at this same Costa do Sauipe event 6-2, 6-2 in second-round action.
Fognini should be encouraged that he at least took Robredo to three sets last week, but he will once again be hard-pressed to pull off the upset. The world No. 54 lost in the first round of his three other tournaments this year before reaching the Santiago semis. Robredo, on the other hand, is 9-2 for his 2011 campaign and he is also a former champion of this event (2009).
Expect a high-spirited, emotional affair with Robredo coming through in two competitive sets.
