Tommy Robredo is set to take on first-time ATP World Tour finalist Santiago Giraldo on Sunday, as the two battle for the Movistar Open championship title.
World No. 40 Tommy Robredo trails World No. 57 Santiago Giraldo 0-1 in the series, having lost their only previous encounter at the 2010 Australian Open. The Colombian came away with a routine three-set victory in the opening round, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
Robredo is bidding for his 10th ATP World Tour title Sunday afternoon. The 28-year-old Spaniard will be making his first finals appearance since early 2009, when he sealed a title-winning run in Buenos Aires.
Robredo advanced to the Movistar Open championship by virtue of his three-set success against 7th seed Fabio Fognini. The sixth seed rallied to cement a win in two hours and 8 minutes, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
World No. 57 Santiago Giraldo made his first Tour-level final, following his semifinal victory against 5th Potito Starace. The 8th seed overcame a slow start, having come from behind to win in three, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-1.
Prediction: Both players have endured tricky matches en route to the final. Robredo, who looks to capture his 9th clay-court title, looked particularly vulnerable on serve during the semifinal.
If Giraldo can keep his effort at a high level on Sunday, he should win his first Tour title in three sets.
