Marin Cilic loses his first-round doubles match with Goran Ivanisevic at the Zagreb Indoors, but he will kick off his singles campaign against Igor Kunitsyn on Wednesday. Radek Stepanek and Florian Mayer are also in action.
(1) Marin Cilic vs. Igor Kunitsyn
Cilic will begin his quest for a third consecutive title at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors when he takes the court against Kunitsyn on Wednesday afternoon. This tournament could be just what Cilic needs to get back on track. The 6'6'' Croat reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, but he had a dismal second half of 2010 and he lost in the first round of the Chennai Open (where he was also two-time defending champion) to begin this year.
Kunitsyn registers 75 spots behind his opponent at 95th in the world rankings. The veteran Russian is off to a decent start in 2011, having advanced one round in Melbourne before losing to Andy Roddick. Kunitsyn got past Jaroslav Pospisil in the Zagreb first round. Cilic earned an opening-round bye as the No. 1 seed, but he was featured in doubles action on Tuesday and lost with 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic. Count on Cilic winning this one in straight sets.
Radek Stepanek vs. (5) Florian Mayer
Stepanek and Mayer will be going head-to-head for the second time this season when they battle for a quarterfinal spot in Zagreb on Wednesday. They faced each other last month in Brisbane, with Stepanek cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 win. Their only prior encounter came seven years ago on the clay courts of Estoril, where Mayer prevailed 6-4, 6-2.
Both players are in solid form at the moment. Stepanek is toiling down at 63rd in the world largely due to physical problems, but the 32-year-old Czech reached the Brisbane semis, advanced one round at the Australian Open, and destroyed Stefan Koubek on Tuesday. Mayer already has seven ATP wins this season, including one over Nikolay Davydenko in Melbourne. The 38th-ranked German outlasted Franco Skugor in a third-set tiebreaker on Monday. This could go either way, but Mayer for revenge in three sets is the pick.
