Third seed Thomaz Bellucci will kick off his Movistar Open title defense early Monday, as he faces Filippo Volandri of Italy. The defending champion is joined in opening-round action by sixth seed Tommy Robredo.
(3) Thomaz Bellucci vs. Filippo Volandri
World No. 31 Thomaz Bellucci looks to rebound after a disappointing run at the Australian Open. The 23-year-old Brazilian, who made the quarterfinal in Auckland, fell to Jan Hernych in the second round.
Monday’s appearance signals the third Movistar Open effort for Bellucci, who won the 2010 title over Juan Monaco in three sets.
World No. 86 Filippo Volandri, taking part in his third Movistar Open, has struggled in 2011. The 29-year-old Italian veteran failed to qualify in Auckland and crashed out of the first round in Melbourne. He is 0-1 for the season.
Prediction: Bellucci in straight sets.
(6) Tommy Robredo vs. Frederico Gil
Sixth seed Tommy Robredo trails first-round opponent Frederico Gil 0-1 in the series, having lost their only previous meeting at the 2010 Swiss Open Gstaad.
Robredo enters into the tournament ranked World No. 40, following his round of 16 finish at the Australian Open. The 28-year-old Spaniard, who advanced to the Movistar Open final four in 2009, won three rounds before falling to Roger Federer, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
World No. 80 Frederico Gil returns to competition after a second-round loss to Gael Monfils at the Australian Open. The 25-year-old is slated to make his Movistar Open debut on Monday.
Prediction: Robredo in three sets.
