  • Nalbandian, Monaco in action at Movistar Open

    1/31/11 11:38 PM | Kelli DeMario
Nalbandian, Monaco in action at Movistar Open The top two seeds are set to headline Tuesday play in Santiago, as David Nalbandian and Juan Monaco take to the court against respective opponents Carlos Berlocq and Maximo Gonzalez. The players look to make the round of 16.

    (1) David Nalbandian vs. Carlos Berlocq

World No. 19 David Nalbandian leads countryman Carlos Berlocq 1-0, having won their only meeting at the 2008 French Open.

Nalbandian makes his return to the court, following a second-round exit at the Australian Open. The 29-year-old veteran came through a dramatic five-set match with Lleyton Hewitt in round one, but was forced to retire during round two. The Argentine is competing in his first Movistar Open since 2002.

World No. 65 Carlos Berlocq will attempt to win his first match of the year, after crashing out early in Auckland and the Australian Open. The 27-year-old Argentine is twice a quarter-finalist at the Movistar Open, having reached the last eight in 2007 and 2008.

Prediction: All depends on Nalbandian’s fitness. If he feels 100%, look for him to advance in straight sets.

    (2) Juan Monaco vs. Maximo Gonzalez

World No. 27 Juan Monaco holds a 2-0 edge over compatriot Maximo Gonzalez entering into the opening round. The two last met at the 2009 SkiStar Swedish Open, where first-round match went to Monaco in three sets.

Monaco is 1-2 for the season, following early-round exits in Auckland and Melbourne. Tuesday signals the sixth Movistar Open appearance for the 26-year-old Argentine, who has finished runner-up in 2008 and 2010.

World No. 140 Maximo Gonzalez is bidding for his first Tour-level victory since last July, when he made the round of 16 in Hamburg. The 27-year-old Argentine is set to take part in his second Movistar Open on Tuesday.

    Prediction: Monaco in straight sets.
