David Ferrer will be hoping to win his second Auckland title in the last four years when he takes the court on Saturday. Standing in his way is David Nalbandian.
Familiar foes David Ferrer and David Nalbandian will be meeting for the 12th time in their careers when they do battle in the final of the Heineken Open on Saturday afternoon.
Ferrer leads the head-to-head series 6-5, but Nalbandian has won three in a row and has taken five of their seven hard-court encounters. Ferrer is a perfect 4-0 in the series on clay. They most recently faced each other in the first round of last season's Canada Masters, with Nalbandian prevailing 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Another competitive clash should be on the menu for this one. Both players are in stellar form, with Ferrer coming off an especially notable year in which he qualified for the World Tour Finals in London. The seventh-ranked Spaniard has kept up the momentum this week with three-set wins over Tobias Kamke and Philipp Kohlschreiber followed by a straight-set defeat of Santiago Giraldo.
Nalbandian enjoyed a mostly injury-free 2010 campaign and he is looking even better in 2011. So far in Auckland the 27th-ranked Argentine has dismissed Fabio Fognini, Philipp Petzschner, defending champion John Isner, and No. 2 seed Nicolas Almagro without losing a single set.
This could go either way, but Nalbandian has a clear edge on hard courts and in terms of level of play this week. Ferrer is too consistent and playing too well to get blown off the court, but the No. 1 seed and 2007 Auckland champ will likely need an off day from his opponent in order to lift the trophy. Look for Nalbandian to win it in three sets.
