Third seed Ernests Gulbis is scheduled to take on former world No. 6 Gilles Simon in Friday’s semifinal at the Medibank International. The competitors are joined by Viktor Troicki, who will take on Florian Mayer.
(3) Ernests Gulbis vs. Gilles Simon
World No. 24 Ernests Gulbis is bidding for his first ATP World Tour final since sealing a title-winning run at the 2010 event in Delray Beach. The 22-year-old Lativan survived a scare in his opening round, where he rallied to oust qualifier Igor Andreev in three sets. Gulbis came through the quarterfinal with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Sergiy Stakhovsky on Thursday.
World No. 41 Simon made the semifinals after beating Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets. 6-4, 6-3. The 26-year-old Frenchman has not lost a set this week, having downed 8th seed Yen Hsun-Lu and qualifier Frederico Gil with little difficulty. He will attempt to reach his first final since Nice last season.
Prediction: Expect a competitive match with two contrasting styles. A more patient Simon in three sets.
(4) Viktor Troicki vs. Florian Mayer
Fourth seed Viktor Troicki trails opponent Florian Mayer 0-1 heading into their semifinal clash. The players last met at the 2010 Australian Open, where the German rallied to a second-round win in four sets.
The Serbian has recorded two straight set victories in Sydney after defeating veteran Juan Ignacio Chela and fifth seed Richard Gasquet. The 24-year-old, ranked World No. 30, remains on track to make his fourth ATP World Tour final.
World No. 37 Mayer booked a semifinal berth with a 6-4, 6-1 success over veteran Potito Starace of Italy. The 27-year-old German has posted straight-set wins during the tournament, having upended James Ward and Juan Martin Del Potro earlier this week. He looks to reach his fourth Tour-level final.
Prediction: Troicki in straight sets.

Wow what happened? Was Gulbis aweful or Simon was on fire? Good for Simon to be able to reach a final again, hopefully he has finally regain his form and his game. He needs that for his AO esp if he makes it to face Fed there.
Btw, Gulbis is in whose qtr at the AO?

Really pleased for Simon, but Gulbis won three (!) points in the second set. I suspect we got a bit of the Ernests of old.

Gulbis was up a break in the first set (5-4) and Simon broke back ... well Gulbis totally allowed it to happen. ;) He got flustered and never recovered ... and Simon gleefully took over.
