A pair of all-seeded quarterfinal clashes are on Thursday's menu in Auckland. John Isner is going up against David Nalbandian and David Ferrer is taking on Philipp Kohlschreiber.
(6) David Nalbandian vs. (3) John Isner
Isner started off the 2010 season in blistering fashion, winning his first career ATP title at this very same Heineken Open. The 6'9'' American appears to be doing the same in 2011, having led the United States to the Hopman Cup trophy last week in Perth. On Wednesday, Isner kicked off his title defense with a 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 win over Robin Haase.
Up next for Isner in the quarterfinals is Nalbandian, who has taken out Fabio Fognini and Philipp Petzschner without losing a set this week. Isner and Nalbandian have faced each other once before, with the Argentine advancing via retirement last summer at the Cincinnati Masters. Isner was leading at the time of injury, and he should have a slight edge in this one as long as he puts in a high percentage of first serves.
(1) David Ferrer vs. (8) Philipp Kohlschreiber
Ferrer and Kohlschreiber will be squaring off for the ninth time in their careers when they do battle in Auckland on Thursday. The head-to-head series is 5-3 in Ferrer's favor, and the Spaniard most recently got the best of Kohlschreiber 7-5, 7-6(1) on the clay courts of Monte-Carlo in 2010. They were supposed to face each other two years ago in the Auckland quarterfinals, but Kohlschreiber pulled out.
Kohlschreiber, who lost last week in the Doha second round to Ivo Karlovic, has dismissed Carlos Berlocq and Marcel Granollers so far this week. Ferrer got an opening-round bye before fighting past up-and-coming German Tobias Kamke in three sets. The world No. 7 is taking part in his first event of the season. This should be a good one and could go either way, but Ferrer in three sets is the pick.
