    (3) Ernests Gulbis vs. Igor Andreev

World No. 24 Ernests Gulbis trails round of 16 opponent Igor Andreev 0-2 in the head-to-head series. The players last met at the 2009 Masters 1000 Indian Wells, where the Russian recorded a straight-set, second-round victory.

Gulbis returns to action after reaching the final eight in Doha. The 22-year-old Latvian won back-to-back matches before falling to World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, 6-7(3), 3-6. The third seed is set to make his second appearance at the Medibank International on Wedensday.

World No. 79 Andreev rebounded following his first-round exit in Brisbane last week, having ousted Jeremy Chardy in straight sets. The 27-year-old Russian converted four of 8 break chances to cement an opening-round win, 6-2, 6-4. He is bidding for his first Sydney quarterfinal since finishing runner-up in 2006.

    Prediction: Gulbis in three sets.

Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Florian Mayer

Former World No. 4 Juan Martin Del Potro holds a 2-1 edge against round of 16 opponent Florian Mayer. The two last clashed at the 2010 Australian Open, where the Argentine won a third-round match in four sets.

Del Potro recorded his first victory in nearly a year, following his marathon ousting of sixth seed Feliciano Lopez. The 22-year-old tallied 21 aces en route to a three-hour and 20-minute success, 6-7(5), 7-6(9), 7-6(3).

World No. 37 Mayer began the event with a 7-5, 6-0 win over wildcard James Ward. The 27-year-old German, who reached the Brisbane quarterfinal last week, remains on course to reach his first quarterfinal in Sydney.

Prediction: Del Potro in straight sets.
