  • Isner begins Heineken Open title defense

    1/11/11 6:32 PM | Ricky Dimon
Isner begins Heineken Open title defense John Isner, the 2010 Auckland champion, will take the court on Wednesday following a first-round bye. David Nalbandian and Philipp Petzschner are also looking for spots in the quarterfinals.

Robin Haase vs. (3) John Isner

Isner won the first ATP title of his career at last year's Heineken Open, outlasting Arnaud Clement in a third-set tiebreaker after saving one match point. It propelled the 6'9'' American to a banner year in which he captivated the sports world with his win over Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon and was a staple of the top 20 in the world rankings. Isner is already in fine form this season having led the United States to the Hopman Cup title in Perth, Australia.

Up first for Isner is Haase, a big hitter who is coming off a quarterfinal showing at the Chennai Open. Haase and Isner faced each last fall on the indoor hard courts of Basel, where Haase prevailed 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5. While Isner got a first-round bye as this week's No. 3 seed, the Dutchman had to survive Pablo Cuevas in a third-set tiebreaker on Tuesday. Fatigue could be a factor, so look for Isner to get revenge in three tight sets.

    (6) David Nalbandian vs. Philipp Petzschner

Like Haase, Petzschner is also attempting to bounce back from a hard-fought win in a third-set tiebreaker. The 59th-ranked German battled past Thiemo De Bakker in two hours and 16 minutes on Tuesday. It is already an improvement for Petzschner, who lost last week in the Brisbane first round to Feliciano Lopez.

Nalbandian, playing his first tournament of 2011, ousted Fabio Fognini in two competitive sets in the Auckland opening round. The 27th-ranked Argentine is hoping to build on a solid season in which he stayed mostly injury free, and he is off to a good start. Unless Petzschner has a huge serving day, Nalbandian in three sets is the pick.

Isner would know all about fatigue, wouldn't he ;-). Luckily, this is a best of 3 match and with all these booming serves the games will end quickly. Haase can profit from that ;-).

So, far Isner is pretty much outplayed. His serve is the only thing keeping him in the match.

Love Haase, think he's top 10 material providing he stays injury free.
