  • Soderling faces Roddick for Brisbane title

    1/8/11 8:58 PM | Kelli DeMario
Soderling faces Roddick for Brisbane title The top two seeds will go head-to-head at the Brisbane International, as World No. 5 Robin Soderling battles defending champion Andy Roddick on Sunday. The players are set to contest their sixth ATP World Tour match.

World No. 5 Robin Soderling holds a slender 3-2 series edge over World No. 8 Andy Roddick after winning their last clash at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris. The Swede secured a 7-5, 6-4, quarterfinal-round victory en route to winning his first Masters shield. The competitors are level at 2-2 on hard-court.

Soderling will attempt to record his 7th ATP World Tour championship win since his professional debut in 2001. Sunday afternoon will mark the 17th finals appearance for the Swede, who aims to take hard-court title No. 3.

The 26-year-old reached the final following his 6-3, 7-5 ousting of 2009 Brisbane International winner Radek Stepanek. The World No. 5 has not dropped a set this week, having downed opponents Ryan Harrison, Michael Berrer and Matthew Ebden with little difficulty.

Defending champion Andy Roddick made the title match after holding on to defeat Kevin Anderson in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. The World No. 8 looks to continue his solid service effort, having tallied 42 aces through four completed matches.

The 28-year-old American is set to make his 49th showing in an ATP World Tour final. With a victory on Sunday, he adds title No. 30 to his resume.

Prediction: Expect a better effort from both players after they showed some vulnerability in the semifinal. If Soderling can keep his emotions and error count in check, look for him to win the title. The Swede in two very tight sets.

Roddick will take care of this one

With Soderling being just 180 points behind Murray in the rankings would a win over Roddick give him 250 points and the no. 4 seeding heading into the AO?

I think Soderling will be seeded 4th for AO. Roddick didn't play so very well. Soderling was very solid.

Now this may hurt few people..

Now Sod will be no 4 just before the AO and he will be 4th seed and murray will be 5th.

the same thing happend last year and Murray end up playing quartefinal with Nadal..

So this it could be any one of Fed Nadal and Djoker..

Lost the raking at the wrong time..LOL

It can also be Sod vs Murray in the QF, in which case it makes no difference whether Murray is no.4 or no.5. The only difference is Murray will not have a chance to meet either one of Roddick, Berdych or Ferrer in the QF. He'll be meeting one of players ranked between 9 to 12 in the fourth round instead of ranked 13 to 16, tougher on paper.

Old AO draws dating back to 2002 show the no.5 seed and the no.1 have ended up in the same quarter only once ('06) same with the no.2 seed ('07) whereas the no.4 seed has been in the same quarter as the no.5 seed four times ('02, '03, '05 and '09). It's looking like a fairly brutal draw for one of the top players.

Huge oportunities for Soderling to strenghen his ranking position in AO (if he finally can solve his "AO-problem"), while Murray need to reach the final just to defend his points ...

Robin can possibly get to #3 with a good performance in Melbourne.
