  • Berdych, Tipsarevic in Chennai quarterfinal action

    1/7/11 5:02 AM | Ricky Dimon
Berdych, Tipsarevic in Chennai quarterfinal action Tomas Berdych and Janko Tipsarevic will be looking for spots in the Chennai semifinals on Friday. Stanislas Wawrinka is also taking the court.

    (1) Tomas Berdych vs. Blaz Kavcic

Seeded first in Chennai, Berdych has been in fine form this week and he looks to extend his campaign to the semifinals when he begins the action on Friday. The sixth-ranked Czech blasted Frederico Gil in 45 minutes on Tuesday before rolling over Ivan Dodig. Up next for Berdych is Kavcic, who has taken out Jeremy Chardy and Robert Kendrick without losing more than three games in any of his four contested sets. The 112th-ranked Slovak is playing stellar tennis, but Berdych is a different beast than Kavcic's first two opponents. Berdych in straight sets is the pick.

    (6) Janko Tipsarevic vs. Kei Nishikori

Tipsarevic and Nishikori will be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they do battle in Chennai on Friday. Both players have looked good so far this week, with Tipsarevic easing past both Eduardo Schwank and Alexander Kudryavtsev as Nishikori battled to overcome Marin Cilic and Alejandro Falla in three sets. Tipsarevic is looking for his third consecutive trip to the Chennai quarterfinals, but this will be the 49th-ranked Serb's toughest test yet. Expect a three-setter, with a slight edge going to the No. 6 seed.

    (3) Stanislas Wawrinka vs. (8) Robin Haase

Wawrinka and Haase will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers, having just recently faced each other last fall in Stockholm, where Wawrinka pulled out a 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-4 thriller. Another close one could be in the cards if Haase's previous matches are an indication. The 65th-ranked Dutchman lost the first set in each of first two wins this week over Frank Dancevic and Yuichi Sugita. Wawrinka has not yet dropped a set, although both Rohan Bopanna and David Goffin gave him good fights. Look for the 21st-ranked Swiss to once again survive Haase in three.
