Janko Tipsarevic faces Alexandre Kudryavtsev in the Chennai second round on Thursday. Kei Nishikori is also seeking a place in the quarterfinals.
(6) Janko Tipsarevic vs. (Q) Alexandre Kudryavtsev
Tipsarevic will be looking for his third straight trip to the Aircel Chennai Open quarterfinals when he takes the court on Thursday. The 49th-ranked Serb lost to Marin Cilic in the 2009 quarters and fell to Cilic again in the 2010 semifinals. Tipsarevic, seeded sixth this week, is coming off an inconsistent year in which he went 25-23. He started 2011 in fine form on Monday with an easy straight-set win over Eduardo Schwank.
Standing in Tipsarevic's way is Kudryavtsev, who silenced the Indian crowd on Tuesday by dominating wild card Yuki Bhambri 6-2, 6-1. The 25-year-old Russian is already in the midst of a great week having qualified for the main draw and picked up his third career ATP match win. However, look for Kudryavtsev's run to end in straight sets against Tipsarevic.
Alejandro Falla vs. Kei Nishikori
Falla and Nishikori will be squaring off for the third time in their careers when they go head-to-head in Chennai on Thursday. Nishikori has won both of their previous meetings; 6-4, 6-3 three years ago in Indianapolis and 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at Queen's Club in 2008. Falla, ranked No. 105 in the world, will look to turn the tide with the momentum he got from a 7-5, 6-3 win over Rui Machado on Tuesday.
Nishikori, despite being ranked just seven places higher at 98th, has to be considered the favorite in this one especially after his first-round performance. He took out Cilic, the two-time defending champion, 4-6, 7-6(0), 6-2 on Monday. The 21-year-old Japanese star would likely have a much better ranking if not for major elbow problems, but his climb back is clearly underway. Nishikori in three sets is the pick.
