Top seed Robin Soderling and defending champion Andy Roddick are in action at the Brisbane International on Thursday as they square off against respective opponents Michael Berrer and Marcos Baghdatis.
(1) Robin Soderling vs. Michael Berrer
World No. 5 Robin Soderling will continue his quest for the Brisbane International title Thursday afternoon, as he meets first-time challenger Michael Berrer. The Swede made a strong start to the event with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over American qualifier Ryan Harrison. The 26-year-old collected eight aces and three service breaks through 66 minutes.
World No. 58 Berrer fought through a tricky opening round, having rallied on to beat Dudi Sela in three sets, 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-2. The 30-year-old German will attempt to reach his first quarterfinal since October, when he made the final four in Vienna.
Prediction: Soderling in straight sets.
(2) Andy Roddick vs. (5) Marcos Baghdatis
Defending champion Andy Roddick leads fifth seed Marcos Baghdatis 2-1 in the series as the players head into the quarterfinal. The two are set to meet for the first time since the American won a round of 16 match at the 2007 Masters Series Canada.
The world No. 8 looks for his third victory of the week, after taking out both Marinko Matosevic and Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets. The 28-year-old has tallied 20 aces through two completed matches.
World No. 20 Baghdatis survived a test in the first round, where he dug out of a set deficit to down veteran Florent Serra, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. The 25-year-old Cypriot came through a far easier round of 16, as he defeated Lukasz Kubot, 6-2, 6-2. Baghdatis remains on track to secure a third consecutive hard-court quarterfinal, after making the last eight in Moscow (finalist) and Vienna.
Prediction: Roddick in three sets.
