  • Gasquet, Berdych back in action at Chennai Open

    1/4/11 7:38 PM | Ricky Dimon
Gasquet, Berdych back in action at Chennai Open Coming off a pair of crushing victories, Richard Gasquet and Tomas Berdych will take the court in Chennai on Wednesday. They are looking for spots in the quarterfinals.

Bjorn Phau vs. (4) Richard Gasquet

Phau and Gasquet will be going head-to-head at the ATP level for the first time in their careers when they meet in the second round of the Aircel Chennai Open on Wednesday. They have faced each other once before, with Gasquet taking a 2003 clay-court Challenger match in three sets.

Both players kicked off their 2011 campaigns in fine form. Phau, toiling at No. 102 in the world, maintained his chance for a spot in the main draw of the Australian Open by cruising past Simone Bolelli 6-2, 6-2. Gasquet, ranked 30th in the world and seeded fourth this week, crushed fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-1, 6-3. Clearly still playing with confidence after a bounce-back 2010 season, Gasquet should win this in two competitive sets.

    (1) Tomas Berdych vs. Ivan Dodig

Berdych slumped throughout the latter stages of an otherwise outstanding 2010 season, but he showed signs of rounding back into form on Tuesday during his Chennai opener. The top-seeded Czech, who compiled a 45-26 record last year, disposed of Frederico Gil 6-1, 6-0.

Up next for Berdych is Dodig, who earned his 11th career match win at the ATP level by easing past Marcos Daniel 6-2, 6-2 on Monday. Dodig, a 26-year-old Croat, registers at No. 88 in the world and he went a solid 8-7 on the ATP circuit in 2010. The underdog has been playing well, but he should be no match for Berdych.
