Top seed Robin Soderling will make his 2011 season bow at the Brisbane International, set to face qualifier Ryan Harrison. Fernando Verdasco is also in first-round action, looking to post a victory over Benjamin Becker.
(1) Robin Soderling vs. (Q) Ryan Harrison
Top seed Robin Soderling returns to the Brisbane International after making the quarterfinal in 2009. The 26-year-old Swede, who recently joined forces with new coach Claudio Pistolesi, completed a solid 2010 season ranked world No. 5. Soderling ended the year with a 57-22 record, aided by his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 championship in Paris.
Qualifier Ryan Harrison enters into his first Brisbane International ranked World No. 173. The 18-year-old American is bidding for his sixth ATP World Tour-level victory. Harrison will be making his first appearance in a tour-level event since the US Open, where he lost a second-round match to Sergiy Stakhovsky in five sets.
Prediction: Soderling in straight sets.
(3) Fernando Verdasco vs. Benjamin Becker
Third seed Fernando Verdasco leads veteran Benjamin Becker 4-2 in the head-to-head series. The players split two hard-court meetings in 2010, with the Spaniard taking a round of 16 match en route to the San Jose title.
Verdasco, who made the Brisbane International final in 2009, heads into the tournament ranked world No. 9. The 27-year-old Madrid native faltered at the tail end of the 2010 season, narrowly missing the cut for the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
World No. 53 Becker is set to take part in his third Brisbane International, having reached the quarterfinal in 2007. The 29-year-old German booked a trio of Tour-level semifinal berths to finish the season at 29-31.
Prediction: Verdasco in three sets.
