Tomas Berdych and Richard Gasquet will contest their Chennai Openers on Tuesday. They are set for meetings with Frederico Gil and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, respectively.
(1) Tomas Berdych vs. Frederico Gil
Berdych and Gil will be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they go head-to-head in the opening round of the Aircel Chennai Open on Tuesday. Seeded first and the clear title favorite with Marin Cilic out of the tournament, Berdych is coming off a breakout 2010 campaign. The sixth-ranked Czech struggled at the end of the season, but he still went 45-26 and reached the Wimbledon final.
Gil registers down at No. 101 in the world, but he also enjoyed a stellar season by his standards. The Portuguese baseliner won 12 matches at the ATP level, giving him 42 ATP wins for his career. Still, Gil does his best on clay and he will have a hard time with Berdych's power on a hard court. Berdych in straight sets is the pick.
(Q) Edouard Roger-Vasselin vs. (4) Richard Gasquet
An all-French affair featuring Roger-Vasselin and Gasquet is on Tuesday's menu in Chennai. Roger-Vasselin has already made a solid start to the year having won a trio of qualifying matches to get into the main draw. The world No. 124 dismissed Shahbaaz Khan, Franco Skugor, and up-and-coming Canadian Milos Raonic.
In his first full season since a 2008 suspension, Gasquet showed signs of playing his way back to the top. He compiled a 38-22 record and climbed to No. 30 in the world. Look for Gasquet, seeded fourth this week, to have too much game for his countryman in a two-set victory.
