Ernests Gulbis will usher in the second round at the Paris Masters while Gilles Simon makes his 2010 BNP Paribas Masters debut.
Ernests Gulbis vs. Mikhail Youzhny
Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis advanced to the second round when first-round opponent, Juan Ignacio Chela, retired with a wrist injury. The match win is the first for Gulbis since he made the quarterfinals in Bangkok.
He will take on Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny. Gulbis won their last meeting just this year on the clay courts of Madrid, but that was a different Gulbis – and Youzhny isn’t at his best on clay. The Russian has had good results this fall. He won the event in Kuala Lumpur and made the finals in St. Petersburg.
Given Gulbis’s current form and the fact that Youzhny has had a week’s rest, the Russian should comfortably walk away with the win.
Gilles Simon vs. Andrey Golubev
Though not quite as well known, Andrey Golubev currently enjoys a higher ranking than French opponent Gilles Simon. The Kazakh made the finals last month in Kuala Lumpur, but he has been struggling ever since with a series of first and second round losses.
Simon, conversely, struggled in the first part of the year but has come on of late. The Frenchman reached the quarterfinals and semifinals in his last two tournaments. While fatigue could play a factor, Simon should have enough left in the tank to handle an out-of-form Golubev.
Prediction – Simon in straight sets.

This is getting ridiculous. LOL. It's almost Federer-like.

First time to watch Golubev. He really has a decent game with steady groundstrokes.

complete collapse by Golubev. He was the better player for almost two full sets.
