Richard Gasquet will start his bid at the Open Sud de France as the marquee night match on the opening day of play.
France’s Richard Gasquet is slowly making his way back up the rankings. After a disastrous 2009, the Frenchman once again finds himself back in the top 30. He lost badly to Novak Djokovic in the third round of Shanghai, but the last time he played on French soil (Metz), he made the semifinals.
Gasquet’s opponent is the No. 115-ranked Julian Reister from Germany. Reister plays almost exclusively on the Challenger tour. His last tournament was the Tiburon Challenger, in which he lost in the second round to American Kevin Kim.
This should be relatively straightforward for Gasquet. The Frenchman is finding his stride and Reister does not have the game to challenge a top-level player.
Albert Montanes will also take to the court. The Spaniard is generally considered a clay-court specialist, but he is trying his hand at the fast indoors in France this week. He will take on the crafty French veteran Arnaud Clement, who is ranked 60th in the world.
Clement likes to play in front of his countrymen, so this could be a short tournament for Montanes.
