Andy Murray will continue his Shanghai campaign against Jeremy Chardy on Thursday. A place in the quarterfinals is at stake.
Andy Murray and Jeremy Chardy will be squaring off for the third time in their careers and second time in two months when they meet in the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Thursday afternoon. Murray has won both of their previous encounters; 6-4, 6-2 last year at the Montreal Masters and 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-2 this summer in Cincinnati.
Chardy ran into a fatigued Murray in Cincinnati and he could be catching the fourth-ranked Scot at a favorable time once again. Murray, who won the Toronto Masters title prior to Cincinnati, still has not regained the same form. He lost early at the U.S. Open to Stanislas Wawrinka and got blown out by Ivan Ljubicic last week in Beijing. Still, the No. 4 seed is 37-14 for the season and made routine work of Chinese wild card Yan Bai in round one on Wednesday.
Chardy has been in solid form during the second half of the year. The 23-year-old Frenchman has not lost a first-round match since Stuttgart in July and he has already won two matches this week. After taking out Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets, Chardy outlasted Alexandr Dolgopolov in three. The world No. 59 is an even 26-26 for his 2010 campaign.
As their most recent clash indicates, Chardy is capable of giving Murray a serious test. However, the underdog will have to serve big and go for his forehands, because he cannot last as long as Murray in rallies. This could be competitive, but look for the favorite to advance in two tight sets.

Congrats to Murray for the win. He did enough to win, not expanding too much energy. Well done.
