Juan Monaco and Mischa Zverev are set for an all-unseeded battle in Shanghai on Thursday. A place in the quarterfinals is on the line.
Juan Monaco and Mischa Zverev will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they go head-to-head in the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Thursday. Zverev won their only previous encounter 6-3, 6-3 two years ago on the New Haven hard courts.
While Zverev has never really emerged in the time since the last meeting between these two players, he could be in line for a breakout week on tour. Coming off a recent final appearance in Metz, Zverev has maintained his fine form. The 118th-ranked German outlasted Sergiy Stakhovsky in a third-set tiebreaker in round one before upsetting world No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets. Zverev is now 12-16 for his 2010 campaign and will be back inside the Top 100 on Monday.
Monaco has also endured a relatively lackluster season, compiling a modest 25-17 record in part due to injuries. He is well off his career-high ranking at No. 41 in the world, but so far this week he has taken out Florent Serra and Thiemo De Bakker. The Argentine had lost in the first round of the main draw in his previous five ATP tournaments.
This could go either way and it will likely come down to the surface. Monaco would have a major edge on clay and while these hard courts are not particularly quick, they still might be enough for Zverev. Look for Zverev to dictate play and prevail in three tight sets.
