Robin Soderling will be in second-round action against Nicolas Almagro on Thursday. David Ferrer is also looking for a place in the quarterfinals as he goes up against Yen-Hsun Lu.
Nicolas Almagro vs. (3) Robin Soderling
Almagro and Soderling will be squaring off for the seventh time in their careers when they meet in the second round of the China Open on Thursday. The head-to-head series is tied up at three wins apiece, although Soderling won their only hard-court encounter 6-4, 7-5 last fall in Shanghai. Almagro prevailed most recently on Soderling's home turf with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory in the Bastad final on clay.
Both players are in solid if unspectacular form at the moment. Almagro, coming off a third-round showing at the U.S. Open, is 42-21 for the season following a straight-set win over Lukasz Kubot in round one. Soderling is 44-16 for his 2010 campaign and he registers at No. 5 in the world, but he got crushed by Andrey Golubev in Kuala Lumpur and he needed three sets to get past Tommy Robredo on Tuesday. As their past history suggests, this could go either way, but Soderling in three sets is the pick.
(8) David Ferrer vs. Yen-Hsun Lu
Ferrer will continue his quest for a spot in the World Tour Finals on Thursday in Beijing. The Spaniard is an incredible 49-18 on the year and comes in at No. 11 in the world, good for the No. 8 seed this week. Ferrer reached the semifinals in Kuala Lumpur and he continued his fine form on Tuesday with an easy straight-set win over Denis Istomin.
This is Ferrer's first career clash against Lu, whose season--and career--has been highlighted by a stunning quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon. Chinese Taipei's No. 1 player (No. 45 overall) is 13-16 for the season after taking out Illya Marchenko in straight sets on Tuesday. Lu will have the crowd behind him, but look for Ferrer to advance in straight sets.
