Novak Djokovic will try to put his team on the scoreboard as Serbia bids for its first trip to the Davis Cup final. Djokovic's opponent on Friday is Radek Stepanek.
There is no rest for the weary, as Novak Djokovic will be back in action just four days after losing an entertaining four-setter to Rafael Nadal in the U.S. Open final. Djokovic is set for a Davis Cup singles showdown with Radek Stepanek as the semifinal tie between Serbia and the Czech Republic begins on Friday.
The two competitors have faced each other on six previous occasions, with Djokovic leading the head-to-head series 5-1. They squared off twice last season and Djokovic won both times, first at the U.S. Open and then in Basel. Stepanek's lone victory came four years ago in a third-set tiebreaker on the indoor hard courts of Rotterdam. Their most memorable encounter took place in the second round of the 2007 U.S. Open, with Djokovic outlasting Stepanek 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(2).
Stepanek would do well just to make this one anywhere close to as competitive as some of their previous meetings. The 31-year-old Czech has played just 19 ATP-level main draw matches this season due to fatigue and injuries. He owns a 9-10 record and is down at No. 35 in the rankings. Stepanek showed signs of rounding into form with a quarterfinal finish in New Haven, but he lost in the U.S. Open first round to Julien Benneteau.
Djokovic, of course, is playing outstanding tennis. The second-ranked Serb was not in top form heading into New York and it showed in a five-set scare against countryman Viktor Troicki in round one, but he heated up in a hurry. Djokovic stormed through to the semis, upset Roger Federer in five sets, then finally succumbed to an on-fore Nadal in four impressive sets.
"Definitely I am ready, otherwise I would not be on board," Stepanek said. "The matches I played with Novak were close and great battles and I don't expect anything else on Friday. He is back at No. 2 in the world and he's gained his confidence back."
That is bad news for the underdog, and so too is the fact that he will also be up against a rowdy Serbian crowd. Even if Djokovic is understandably tired, all signs point to a convincing Djokovic win--and probably in straight sets.

RickyDimon , 9/17/10 12:11 AM
Ricky, it is a long story, but has nothing to do with your article which is spot on.
rfzr , 9/17/10 1:25 AM

RickyDimon , 9/17/10 1:40 AM

Ricky, some comments on this thread might give you a clue:

but I'd advise you not to bother - they're not worth your time!
stu , 9/17/10 4:04 AM
plus there are way too many comments on that thread to find anything specific

Thank you Nole, and see you in a few hours! :)
OllyK , 9/17/10 10:56 AM
eeep, I just read on the Davis Cup site that Nole is out with gastroenteritis and Troicki will play instead. Hope Nole makes a quick recovery! Really, really sad for him and Servia. :-(
Ramara , 9/17/10 1:39 PM
Any news what will happen with another matches? Is he pulling from all matches?
atg , 9/17/10 2:20 PM
that is very sad news...i hope he gets well soon quickly...he has points to defend
vrael , 9/17/10 2:46 PM
Too bad for Nole. Sounds like his stomach bug is nasty.
cherylmurray , 9/17/10 3:00 PM
He has only pulled out from the first rubber for now.
Good thinking by the Serbian team. If Nole needs some rest, it is probably more important for him to play the TBird match. Plus, there's a chance that it will be a dead rubber.
stu , 9/17/10 3:52 PM
And Viktor is two-sets-to-one down. That Stepanek is something at the Davis cup!

rfzr , 9/17/10 10:34 PM
a poster here with a sense of humor very similar to yours (hilarious:P)
stu , 9/17/10 10:43 PM
yea u r right, there are some funny posters here ;)
rfzr , 9/17/10 10:52 PM
rfzr:".. those who can find every single excuse for mono roddick, heavy leg mono federer, didn't show monfils, tired fish, etc. won't agree on weary djokovic.".
First off, is the Joker tired or he's got the runs? WHICH ONE IS IT?? He had the runs in the AO a couple of years ago, didn't he? Whenever he has to face a challenge, as Hewitt aptly put it, "It's always something wrong." Who knows, mayb he's got Mono. I wonder what you'd do if he were to contract mono. make fun of him???? you're so sad, both of you.
It's posters such as yourself, who look for every opportunity to bash Roddick, and now you're bashing federer, that makes me like to show up the Joker, because you never stop looking for excuses to keep up the nastiness. I wonder what the new Joker backer, maxi ,would have to say about your bashing of her dearly beloved, Federer? You dare to criticize Roddick for his allegiance to Davis Cup??? He's played for 9 years in DC.. How many years has the Joker played and/or done anything significant IN DAVIS CUP for his country?? The one year he has an opportunity to do something, he's now got the runs. he he he, lade dada. ain't life grand!!!!!
FYI, NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, who's got a smidgen of fairness, is a true tennis fan, and has followed Davis Cup (some of you only know about and follow DC at the present time, because your faves, who are presently in the top 5, play sporadically) can bad mouth Roddick and his devotion to DC. He brought the US back into DC and have taken them to 3 finals, plus he/they won the Cup in '07.
The past Spanish Captain, Emilio Sanchez, mentioned that it was the US devotion to DC that inspired him to want to captain DC, and he instilled that devotion into his players. CHOKE ON THAT BIG MOUTH!! Is the Joker an inspiration to anyone?? Yes, how to duck and run out on your team when they need you most.
Wanna know what Djokovic has done for DC? He pulled out vs Davydenko, leading by a set and a break, a couple of years ago, citing the flu as an excuse, then immediately got on a plane, to play in Marseilles the same afternoon, and guess what, Serbia lost the DC tie. Roddick WOULD NEVER HAVE DONE THAT. I've seen Roddick throwing up on the side by the players' bench in DC, and still continued to play his match, which he WON.
Your guy is the proverbial choker when there isn't any dollar signs showing up as prize money -- .
I can't believe you have the unmitigated gall to question Federer and Roddick. I also hope you pray THAT THE JOKER NEVER GETS HIT WITH MONO, because he won't be able to deal with it. he can't handle a deviated septum, which many of you deem to be asthma, like the blazes he'll be able to deal with mono. STOP BEING SO NASTY ABOUT OTHER PLAYERS and then maybe others will be kinder to the Joker, who's a real let down when the going gets tough.
FYI, you started this without anyone even mentioning any negativity whatsoever about the Joker. Yous is the first post, followed by your echo. Youi're both not too smart you know. If you want to deflect negativity from your guy, don't put him in the spotlight. Have you ever heard about keeping a low profile?? I guess not.
Now you can do your :) and +1 stuff. Tah dah!!!!
Von , 9/18/10 2:07 AM
Ricky: Stu's comment about lucky and not talented is the same all of the time. in her opinion, an d some of the other Serbians who post on this site, feel that roddick is lucky but untalented. i belieieve you had a similar disuccsion with the same Posmatrac stu is asking about as she claimed the same aboujt roddick, a little over a year ago. maybe you'll remeember that conversation.
I'd like to ask stu, what would she know about talent considering sh'e never contested a match. So much garbage from one who knwos zilch.
Von , 9/18/10 2:12 AM
Oh, and this is for stu and rfzr, I'm rooting for the CZECHS. Go Berdy and Steps, give them a good whipping!!!!!!!!!!! Lade-da-da.
Von , 9/18/10 2:20 AM
Von, i only read your last 2 posts and I need to clarify:
1. I am not Serbian
2. I never insulted Roddick, altho for you, saying something complimentary about Novak is an insult to Roddick.
But I do agree with you on this:
" So much garbage from one who knwos zilch."
stu , 9/18/10 2:41 AM
stu, don't bother, she has the brain of a 7 year old, my pet is more mature than her.
rfzr , 9/18/10 3:25 AM
than she is, wanted to say actually. person obviously feeds on a conflict, and the more attentions you give her the more unpleasant she gets.
rfzr , 9/18/10 3:36 AM
rfzr: Personal insults are indicative of one who's got the brain of a 7 year old -- which is YOU. A poster who is lacking in the use of correct vocabulary is always reduced to the lower level of writing, which is indulging in personal instults towards the opponents when he/she runs out of quality thinking. Got anything smart to say, other than insults, he/she who is oh so intelligent????? If you were very smart, you wouldn't have written the first post on this thread -- you'd have kept quiet. that post reeks of one who's lookikng to start a war. Anyway, talk to yourself, as I'm out.
Von , 9/18/10 3:37 AM
good, close the door please.
rfzr , 9/18/10 3:40 AM
Von, don't get into mud slinging with rfzr. This is one nasty trouble maker!
jean , 9/18/10 4:45 AM
ha ha double account, nice try.
rfzr , 9/18/10 4:57 AM
So it is 1-1. That Steps is a crafty one and good win for Tipsy against the Berd.
Ha ha ha zare and stu ... I didn't even need to watch, updates were great.
smr , 9/18/10 5:21 AM
LOL. The updates were great, and so were the side shows. :-)

"... no rest for the weary ..."
those who can find every single excuse for mono roddick, heavy leg mono federer, didn't show monfils, tired fish, etc. won't agree on weary djokovic. they'll use their own logic to persuade us loudly that novak actually is not tired but fresh and possum minded.
