An improbable quarterfinal is on Thursday's menu at the U.S. Open. In Andy Murray's section of the draw, Mikhail Youzhny and Stanislas Wawrinka will clash for a place in the semis.
Mikhail Youzhny and Stanislas Wawrinka will be squaring off for the fifth time in their careers when they meet in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open on Thursday afternoon.
The head-to-head series is tied at 2-2, but Youzhny leads 2-0 on hard courts while Wawrinka won both of their clay-court encounters. They most recently faced each other at this season's Sony Ericsson Open, with Youzhny prevailing 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in a second-round showdown.
Neither man had been in particularly impressive form since their Miami clash, so this quarterfinal battle comes as quite a surprise. Youzhny has dismissed Andrey Golubev, Dudi Sela, No. 18 seed John Isner, and Tommy Robredo, losing three sets in the process. The 28-year-old Russian registers at No. 14 in the world and is on the brink of breaking back into the Top 10 thanks to his performance in New York.
Wawrinka is also showing signs of making it back to his career-high ranking of No. 9 in the world, although he has a long way to go at No. 27. The Swiss is a solid 30-13 for his 2010 campaign and he is in the midst of a memorable U.S. Open run. After easing past Mikhail Kukushkin and Juan Ignacio Chela, he upset Andy Murray in four sets and outlasted Sam Querrey in a five-set thriller.
"He's really strong player from the baseline," Wawrinka said of Youzhny. "He has a great backhand. It's gonna be difficult for me, but I will be focused more on myself than him."
That's a good plan, because Wawrinka has been dealing with a minor leg injury and he will certainly be fatigued, so he cannot worry about his opponent. In what should be an enticing matchup of one-handed backhands, look for a well-rested Youzhny to advance without too much difficulty.

The tennis isn't brilliant ... but the battle is good.

Yuozhny wins. I am surprised.
I went to bed in the middle of the 3rd set to get a shut eye before Rafa's match, thinking Wawa was going to win, woke up at midnight to find that the match was still on, and in the 5th set.

It's nice to see lower-ranked players step up and make it to the quarters at a GS. After all, these are players who have never received the spotlight, talked about on TV. Yet, they probably put in just as much time and dedication as the top-ranked players. People will talk about Rafa and Fed in winning record GS's but these players only hope to win 1 in their careers and not many people realize how important this time is for them.
