  • Federer, Soderling square off in U.S. Open quarterfinals

    9/8/10 2:33 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer, Soderling square off in U.S. Open quarterfinals Roger Federer and Robin Soderling will be meeting for the fifth time in the last seven Grand Slams when they do battle in the U.S. Open quarterfinals on Wednesday. They also faced each other at this same stage last year.

While the head-to-head history does not suggest this is a rivalry, to say Roger Federer and Robin Soderling are familiar foes would be an understatement.

Federer and Soderling will be squaring off for the the 14th time in their careers when they clash in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open on Thursday night. They have faced each other in four of the past six Grand Slams, including the quarterfinals twice.

Federer prevailed 6-0, 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(6) in last year's U.S. Open quarters, extending his head-to-head dominance over Soderling to 12-0. At this season's French Open, however, Soderling finally got the best of Federer, scoring a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 en route to his second consecutive runner-up finish at Roland Garros.

Now an established force in Grand Slams, Soderling has a real shot at turning his 12-match losing streak to Federer into a two-match winning streak. The fifth-ranked Swede followed up his French Open showing with a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon and he is 40-14 for his 2010 campaign. So far in New York he has dismissed Andreas Haider-Maurer, Taylor Dent, Thiemo De Bakker, and Albert Montanes, losing two sets to Haider-Maurer and one set to Montanes in the process.

Federer enjoyed much smoother sailing in his path to the quarterfinals. The second-ranked Swiss has not surrendered a single set in convincing wins over Brian Dabul, Andreas Beck, Paul-Henri Mathieu, and Jurgen Melzer. Federer is a solid (but unspectacular by his standards) 43-10 for the season, but he is armed with momentum at the right time having triumphed in Cincinnati prior to his four match victories at the U.S. Open.

"I don't think there's any really hidden secrets for both of us," said Federer. "I expect it to be really tough, especially now that he's gotten a taste of how to beat me. It's up to me to clean up my game and put in a good performance."

"It's always a very nice feeling to play against the world's best," Soderling explained. "It's matches like that you train for. It's matches like that I've been dreaming of playing since I started playing tennis, playing at the big courts in the big tournaments. I've played Roger many times. I know his game and he knows mine. I'm pretty sure how I need to play to have a chance to win but it's going to be extremely difficult."

Soderling is hitting the ball huge, as always, and if he can take Federer's timing away on a clay court, he can certainly do it on a fast hard court at the U.S. Open. Federer, however, has far more variety in his game and can make adjustments far easier than his opponent if things aren't going his way. It's hard to side with a player who has never reached the semis against a five-time champion, so Federer in another tight four-setter is the pick.

Federer in 3 sets.

pnp , 9/8/10 6:47 AM

Sod will be deflated here.
King Roger in 3
3 more steps to number 17...

sabs , 9/8/10 7:14 AM

Soda has good attack but brittle defence. He will go from attack to more attack to more, and take one set away. The entire excitement will reduce to going to see whether Roger wins in 3 or 4 or 5. Real battle for Roger will start from the Semis if he faces Joker. With Ferer taking Verdasco on the longest drive, Rafa appears to be into the finals already.

eskay , 9/8/10 7:47 AM

Fed in three, with 2 tight sets. Something like a 6-3, 7-6. 6-2 victory...

imjimmy , 9/8/10 8:29 AM

that's a tough draw for federer to get söderling again in the quarter. söderling for the upset. 6-4 in the fifth...

croc , 9/8/10 9:52 AM

anyone knows if its possible to watch a banded version of this match? it starts around 3 am central european time :( anyone has any ideas? thanks!

croc , 9/8/10 10:34 AM

croc, watch the highlighs on youtube tomorrow.. I think there is also the possibility to download torrents, but I don't know where.

bjawad , 9/8/10 10:41 AM

croc: where exactly are you? You should be able to pick up from

http://www.livescorehunter.com/live-streaming-video-tennis/

It works best with Firefox or Safari but they offer a number of options so it is worth trying them all till you find one that works for you.

ed251137 , 9/8/10 10:56 AM

This match is on Federer's racquet. All federer needs to do is get soderling on the run. (by using short slice, drop shot and taking the ball on the rise) If he does that,he will rush soderling, and as soderling is not fast and he has very elaborate swings he will be in trouble. That being said, soderling will keep it close due to his big first and second serves, and he might win a set by connecting to a few big forehands. But thats it. federer in 4 sets.

tj600 , 9/8/10 11:21 AM

tj600 a very succinct summary. You've said it all.

ed251137 , 9/8/10 11:29 AM

Although I would like to see Söderling lift the trophy on sunday, I don't want it to be on expense of Federer losing "early". Federer should be able to handle this, but it will be really tough.

bjawad , 9/8/10 2:25 PM

Although the FED, and the SOD have both been solid, I remain convinced the FED has the advantage. I expect the FED to prevail and "SHINE ON" in this tournament!!! Go FED! C'MON! :)

sky , 9/8/10 2:51 PM

Robin, you got the chance again to kick the old man's ass. Do it hard this time for me please !!!

Come on, Robin !

Raindrops , 9/8/10 3:11 PM

Sod is useless without his serve, if that's not working he is done, simple as that.

nadline , 9/8/10 3:12 PM

Raindrops go shit yourself! LOL It's the FED baby! C'MON!!!

sky , 9/8/10 3:20 PM

Sky.............Lol!!!!!!!!!! You go, support your man!!!

Fed knows how to dig deep to win so my feeling is that he'll come thru.............but this is the US Open where anything can happen!!

I wish them both the best of luck, may the best man win!!!

Monalysa , 9/8/10 3:33 PM

Nadline, Robin is aware of that pretty much so, he'll try to drop bombs after bombs if that's what he needs to do.

Sky you dumbass, I have my right to voice out my support to a certain player and Robin did kick ass your big mouth man at RG, so there is nothing wrong when I say AGAIN...lolz.

Robin do it harder this time, if you can make cry the old man like a helpless girl at the court, PLEASE DO SO, I'll be the happiest Rafa fan in the whole world ... bwahahahaha

Raindrops , 9/8/10 5:01 PM

P.S.

sky, KICK ASS is your very own words, it looks like you cannot take it when it uses against your man...don't act like a retard, a fedfart. Be man enough to deal with your own words if it hurls back to your man, STUPID.

Raindrops , 9/8/10 5:10 PM

Soderling for the upset, again.

Emiliano55 , 9/8/10 7:24 PM

federer is obviously a huge favourite so söderling can just go out there and play out of his mind. sounds easy!

thanks to ed and bjawad for ideas, it is appreciated!

croc , 9/8/10 8:51 PM

Sod is in a fantastic form, but hopefully Roger brings his A-game and plays lights out tennis!!!

C'mon Roger!!!!!!!

Here is wishing for a great match with Roger lifting his form and focus which will be crucial is he is to eventually prevail tonight.

I don't care how old you are or what other folks say about your character here (it seems like they at one point ate Lindt chocolates with you since they apparently know you "soooo" well lol lol), GO ROGER GOOO, put Robin on the run and take away time from him so he is unable to release his powerful forehand! :}

Sanela , 9/8/10 11:50 PM

I would never share my chocolate with him:(

zare , 9/9/10 12:39 AM

Hahahaha, point taken zare. If it is Lindt chocolate, it would actually mean, he'd have to share it with you, not the other way around. Bottom line, it is a game not a personality contest.

If it was the latter, everything steaming from Fed-haters or Rafa-haters, or Nole-haters, or Murray-haters or elSod-haters... doesn't have merit for me since those kind of judgments don't tell anything note-worthy of the players, onto whom the negativity of haters is projected on. Peace out and ....c'mon ROGER!!!! ;}

Sanela , 9/9/10 1:09 AM

C'MON!!! :) Roger! Roger! Roger! LOL Go for it MAN!

sky , 9/9/10 3:23 AM

Federer will loose either to Soderling or Djokocich as he does not want to be beaten by Nadal in final to complete a Grand slam by beating federer in all Grand Slam final

Federer is smart/cunning and hence he will loose before final

anand , 9/9/10 3:29 AM

told ya already, soderling ofr the upset here. AGAIN.

Emiliano55 , 9/9/10 3:42 AM

will see, you guys are hatching your eggs a little early. C'MON!!! :)

sky , 9/9/10 3:47 AM

kudos that Soderling didnt argue that call in the second game more. That was one of the worst calls i have EVER witnessed.

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 3:54 AM

Wayne Gretzy in the house.

smr , 9/9/10 3:57 AM

What a dropshot!! Nice ...

Sanela , 9/9/10 4:01 AM

fedex will definitely win the match in straight sets

saxenanalin , 9/9/10 4:04 AM

First set is always a beauty! Keep it up FED! :)

sky , 9/9/10 4:09 AM

"kudos that Soderling didnt argue that call in the second game more. That was one of the worst calls i have EVER witnessed."

he wasn't happy, he asked rog "you want it ?" rofl

rfzr , 9/9/10 4:09 AM

Fed has no business winning that set

BJK in the house

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 4:13 AM

m with u too Sky & Saxenanalin... :)

Go Fed.... :D

tomnjerry2 , 9/9/10 4:17 AM

Ricky you seem a little frazzled! No business winning that set? Aren't you being a little harsh, after all he did win it! :) I would call that taking "care" of business.

sky , 9/9/10 4:19 AM

clearly there is collusion between federer and the french umpire pascal maria.

soderling got screwed.

now his mentality is totally ruined.

might aswell hand federer the title because no one else is allowed to beat him at slams.

attackingtennisrulez , 9/9/10 4:22 AM

Soderling might regret missing that overhead!!!!

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 4:25 AM

Cool FEDERER breaks AGAIN! woo hoo!

sky , 9/9/10 4:28 AM

three straight breaks

might as well have Clijsters, Stosur, Dementieva, and Oudin out there

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 4:29 AM

Yeeees! Break. AGAIN.

C'MON ROGER!!!

And Ricky, he had business winning that first set - better serve, more aces,
more winners, a break point converted - albeit a bit more UE and double faults too, but psssh ... :}

Sanela , 9/9/10 4:31 AM

Joba Chamberlain in the house

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 4:31 AM

dont worry, pascal will make sure federer ends up winning this.

all soderling aces will be called lets, every out of federer will be in by half a millimeter, soderling will be given warnings and point penalites.

attackingtennisrulez , 9/9/10 4:33 AM

Unless Soderling starts serving some aces this will be over soon.

smr , 9/9/10 4:44 AM

GSM federer.

federer wins 17th slam.
book it!

attackingtennisrulez , 9/9/10 4:47 AM

where are the nadal fans now or i can say fed haters?

saxenanalin , 9/9/10 4:54 AM

dont see why beating Soderling has anything to do with Federer winning the title

actually, this gives Nadal a much better chance. In fact, this almost locks up the title for Nadal.

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 4:55 AM

""actually, this gives Nadal a much better chance. In fact, this almost locks up the title for Nadal. """_

How so Ricky?

imjimmy , 9/9/10 4:58 AM

@ricky
fed can win against nadal with his new style of play

saxenanalin , 9/9/10 5:01 AM

@ricky

muahahhahahahahahhahah is this one of ur failed genius predictions?

nadal wont even make the final.

and how the hell u think nadal will beat this federer with softer balls and faster court.

if nadal wins the title i will leave this forum for a while.

attackingtennisrulez , 9/9/10 5:02 AM

Mr.Dimon, are you smoking something or has someone hacked into your account or are you just trying to get a reaction from people who are still awake for this match?

"dont see why beating Soderling has anything to do with Federer winning the title"
It is easy, by beating Robin, Federer moves to the semifinal, you know, one match closer to reaching the final perhaps. And only by reaching the final does he actually have a chance of winning the title. Kind of like: "pass A and then B and you'll get to the point C thing". LOL

Sanela , 9/9/10 5:03 AM

damn...ROBIIIINNNNNN, SHAKE IT UP MAN...COME ON.

Raindrops , 9/9/10 5:14 AM

shameful choke from sod.

rfzr , 9/9/10 5:16 AM

Soderling battling his inner demons.

smr , 9/9/10 5:22 AM

soderling getting absolutely humiliated out there.

attackingtennisrulez , 9/9/10 5:25 AM

WoW!!!!!!! ROGERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! yahooooooooooooo!!! C'MON!! :)

sky , 9/9/10 5:28 AM

It's almost over for Soderling, from serving for the set at 5-3, then got broken twice and now receiving to stay in the match hahahaha.

Raindrops , 9/9/10 5:29 AM

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY ROGER!!!!
Congrats and congrats to my fellow FED fans sky, saxenanalin and tomnjerry2. :}

Let's hope Roger rests some rests and regroups for a difficult match against Novak.

Sanela , 9/9/10 5:29 AM

a typo, meaning to say: Let's hope Roger gets some rest and regroups for a difficult match against Novak.

Sanela , 9/9/10 5:31 AM

Awesome tennis from Roger.
He will beat Novak in straights as well.

atul1985 , 9/9/10 5:33 AM

whoa!!! gr8 win for the Fed... Congo to all Fed fans here.... :)

Mighty pleased with win...:D

Go Roger.. :)

tomnjerry2 , 9/9/10 5:39 AM

just give federer the title now and stop this tournament.

foregone conclusion the end result of the tournament.

attackingtennisrulez , 9/9/10 5:41 AM

Thank you Sanela! :) Congrats to all FEDfans! :) Way to go ROGER!!! It was great to see you in your element. Should be a good match against Djokovic. Now give us some "treatment" for Novak.

sky , 9/9/10 5:43 AM

Seems that atr loves provoking fed and rafa fans to get the lights,
way to go man. lol

bolbol , 9/9/10 5:44 AM

Hello saxa, Nadal fan here. A clinical performance by Fed, aided by the wind. Sod couldn't handle the wind, he only served two or three miserable aces the whole match! The wind had taken away Sod's biggest weapon - his serves. Poor Sod, serving for the third set and he got broken back? Though there was no difference even if Sod won the third set, Fed would still beat him the way Fed played tonight.

Nole next, don't be so sure that Fed will have it easy like tonight, Nole can handle the wind and he played a tactically intelligent match against Monfils. I was surprised by how frequently Nole came to the net in today's match. I think it will be a competitive match.

It's too early to talk about Fed/Nadal final, there are still matches to be played. Why are we jumping into conclusion so soon. Based on the performances of the top three guys so far, all of them have a chance, why go ahead of ourselves and pronounce so and so the winner?

luckystar , 9/9/10 5:45 AM

lol @bolbol..... :P

tomnjerry2 , 9/9/10 5:46 AM

atr - Federer has very little chance of winning

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 5:54 AM

why do you think so Ricky? I think Fed is favourite.

atul1985 , 9/9/10 5:58 AM

Ricky, you sound like a man of very little belief! LOL :) What happened to you?! :) It's going to be FEDERER! The magic man, the FED... C'MON!

sky , 9/9/10 6:00 AM

I agree with luckystar here, I am a fed fan and I extremely want and a fedal final, but i can never count out nole, he's really playing well and a tough match awaits fed on sat. Hope it will be a great match with fed winning it.

bolbol , 9/9/10 6:01 AM

We have seen Nole in this position for the last 2 years only to be beaten comprehensively by Fed in the SF.

I wouldnt read too much into Nole's performance thus far.Nole deoesnt always perform to his best in the BIG matches.
I believe that Fed will get by him in 3 or 4 sets at the max.

atul1985 , 9/9/10 6:14 AM

Can't write off Nole based on past performances. If we base on past experiences, then we also need to take into consideration those times that he did perform beyond expectations. Did we expect Nole to reach the USO final in 2007? Did we expect him to beat Fed in the semi of AO 2008? Did we expect him to win the AO final in 2008 against Tsonga when Tsonga was beating everybody else along the way - the likes of Murray, Gasquet, Youzhny, Nadal?

Also he did play well against Rafa at the FO semifinals in 2007 and 2008, he just lost to the King of Clay. This year at the slams, his results were improving - from QFs at AO, FO to semi at Wimbledon and now USO, so further improvement is a possibility. Of course there is no guarantee but Nole seems to love the USO very much and his performances at the USO are better overall than at the other slams, except maybe that slam victory at the AO 2008.

luckystar , 9/9/10 6:50 AM

..by the same logic of luckystar Fed should be able to beat Nadal in a final. But I bet luckystar wont show such unbiased pragmatism everytime!

tennisnba , 9/9/10 7:03 AM

nir, when did I say Nole will sure beat Fed? Didn't you read my posts on the other threads that I said Nole/Fed it is 50-50; in the final, if Rafa/Nole 50-50, even if Fed vs Rafa, I give it a 50-50. Why don't u go and verify what I posted on the other thread before accusing me of anything. I'll never take things for granted and say that Rafa will sure beat Fed! Nothing is for sure, thats why I say the top three guys have equal chances.

Even Verdasco vs Rafa, Rafa can't take things for granted and assume that he'll
sure beat Verdasco, given that experience at the SF of AO 2009.

luckystar , 9/9/10 7:34 AM

@sanela
congrats to u and also to all the fed fans
was down with some work so couldnt post earlier
I hope semi against joker should be a cakewalk for fedex

saxenanalin , 9/9/10 9:36 AM

nirv02, for your info, the thread I was referring to is the 'Soderling overcome Montanes, Federer next' thread, should you care to verify, though I think you won't be interested.

luckystar , 9/9/10 10:10 AM

saxenanalin I doubt very much the FED's match against Djokovic will be a cakewalk, but I do expect he will WIN! :) I'm looking forward to some good tennis! C'MON!

sky , 9/9/10 3:32 PM

I am pretty happy with Fed's this win (specially in straight sets)..

Those who are(were) claiming Fed wont be able to handle those big hitters in the future, this result shows that Fed is still the TennisMastero.

Before USO he defeated Berdych and now sod both of the guys who took the advantage of fed's mistiming and other issues at that time..

Fed in one interview told that he has seen the video of his both the matches and said that reason why he lost was he allowed his opponent to play more aggressive than him and Fed has proved that when he play his game those big hitters always get in trouble..

People will say that conditions were windy and Fed adopted better than Sod, then in FO the situation was almost same and when Fed said that conditions suited Sod better than him , people started critisicing him and saying him arrogant and trying to take away the credit that Sod deserves..

champ00289 , 9/9/10 4:56 PM

champ00289 , 9/9/10 4:56 PM

well put...couldn't agree more!

Sanela , 9/9/10 6:00 PM

champ, Fed himself mentioned that the slow damp condition that day, after the rain, at the FO favored Sod's style of play. I agree with him as I think prior to the rain break, Fed was the better player. He should not have lost his serve in the second set to allow Sod to level the match at 1-1.

To me, it is obvious that weather conditions do play a part in a match, especially to those players who can't deal with the elements. Fed and Rafa are a class of their own, whether it is hot weather, windy conditions or whatever, it will not affect their play that much. For a player like Sod, yes wind does play a part in his performance at a match; maybe that explains why he won more indoor tournaments than outdoor ones. For player like Nole, heat does affect his level of play, so we can't really rule out how weather conditions affect a player. Actually all these goes to show how good both Fed and Rafa are, they can simply play well rain or shine, wind or no wind. They simply can deal with the elements.

luckystar , 9/9/10 6:52 PM

champ00289 , 9/9/10 4:56 PM

+1 yes, totally agree champ00289, there will always be people who complaint... it is in our nature, but the FED has proven and continues to prove that he is still a mighty contender for anything involving tennis out there, and you can magnify that anything tennis out there during the Slams. Way to go FED! Keep it up! Be PROUD! :)
