  • Youzhny, Robredo square off for quarterfinal spot

    9/7/10 3:23 PM | Ricky Dimon
Youzhny, Robredo square off for quarterfinal spot Mikhail Youzhny and Tommy Robredo will meet at the U.S. Open on Tuesday. A place in the quarterfinals is at stake.

Mikhail Youzhny and Tommy Robredo will be squaring off for the first time in four years when the two veterans do battle in the U.S. Open fourth round on Tuesday afternoon.

Their last encounter came at the same stage of this same tournament in 2006, with Youzhny dominating 6-2, 6-0, 6-1 on his way to the semifinals. Robredo won their other two meetings; 6-2, 6-4 eight years ago in Rotterdam and 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 on the clay courts of Bastad in 2005.

At 28 years old, both players are still going strong--especially Youzhny. The Russian has endured some ups and downs throughout his career, but he is back up to No. 14 in the world and perhaps poised to resurface inside the Top 10. Youzhny is 33-14 for his 2010 campaign following U.S. Open wins over Andrey Golubev, Dudi Sela, and No. 18 seed John Isner.

Robredo had been in disappointing form prior to his arrival in New York, compiling a 14-18 record while falling to No. 41 in the world. However, the Spaniard always does well at this event and it has been no different for him this time around. Robredo has now been to the fourth round five out of the past six years and six times in total, although he has never broken into the quarterfinals. So far he has taken out Lukas Rosol, Julien Benneteau, and Michael Llodra, the latter two by retirement.

This should be an entertaining baseline battle and it could go either way. Still, Robredo's 0-6 record in the U.S. Open third round will be a tough mental hurdle to overcome, as will the 2006 blowout loss to Youzhny. This won't be as convincing as it was four seasons ago, but Youzhny should once again advance to the quarterfinals.

Robredo had the upper hand early, but Youzhny is in complete control now

Yes, Ricky. It looks like one-way traffic now, with a 7-5, 6-2 lead. Hard to see most players overcoming a two-set deficit, impossible to see a defensive-loooking Tommy managing it.

Spoke too soon, match not over yet!!!!! Robredo takes 3rd set!!!

solid stuff from Youzhny, back into the USO quarterfinals

4th round again kills Robredo

Sorry Monalysa, but taking the third set does not even begin to equate to overcoming the two-set deficit. I stand over what I said. Tommy played a defensive match and you cannot do that against a guy like "the Colonel" - certainly not from two sets down.

There'll be other days for Tommy, I am sure. Meanwhile congratulations to Mikhail Youzhny, he is playing well and deserves his second quarter-final showing here.

I think Youzny will beat the winner of Wawrinka/Querry too.
