  • Wawrinka looks to continue U.S. Open run against Querrey

    9/7/10 3:36 PM | Ricky Dimon
Wawrinka looks to continue U.S. Open run against Querrey Two days after upsetting Andy Murray, Stanislas Wawrinka will be back in action at the U.S. Open. Wawrinka is set for a fourth-round encounter against Sam Querrey.

Sam Querrey and Stanislas Wawrinka will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they clash in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday afternoon. Their only previous meeting came last year at the Indian Wells Masters, where Wawrinka prevailed in a thriller 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(8).

Querrey and Wawrinka were two of the more impressive players during the first week of the U.S. Open. Losing only one set in his trip to round four, Querrey has taken out Bradley Klahn, Marcel Granollers, and Nicolas Almagro. The 6'6'' American, who owns a 38-18 record with four titles this season, has been broken only once in his last two matches.

Wawrinka has also dropped just one set at the U.S. Open. Following easy wins over Mikhail Kukushkin and Juan Ignacio Chela, the Swiss stunned world No. 4 Andy Murray 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-3. For Wawrinka, that is without question the highlight of a solid but unspectacular year; he is 29-13 but registers well behind his career-high ranking at 27th in the world, five spots back of Querrey.

If Wawrinka plays like he did against Murray he can probably pencil himself into the quarterfinals, but that is easier said the done. Querrey can take his opponent's timing away with big serves and forehands, and the No. 20 seed will have the Arthur Ashe crowd firmly behind him. Look for Querrey to prevail in four competitive sets.

I kinda like Wawa.......very unassuming and he CAN play! Ive seen him push Rafa around.

I also like to see Sam play, but unforntunately he has not yet grown on me, like Isner has.

So, all I can say is, Good luck to both, may the best man win!!

toss up, this one

will be interesting to see what Wawa comes up with after his big win

Hey welcome back Ricky hope you had fun in NY.
Lets see if that thigh injury will play a role.

smr , 9/7/10 7:05 PM

Hi Ricky, welcome back....................just asked about you earlier!

Monalysa , 9/7/10 7:32 PM

how tight is this match?!

stu , 9/7/10 8:11 PM

the commentators are really desperate for the only American standing to win.

stu , 9/7/10 8:16 PM

the new Wawa takes the TB 11-9!

stu , 9/7/10 8:19 PM

most likely it'll be a long match, it is tight, both play well.

rfzr , 9/7/10 8:21 PM

pretty epic first set

RickyDimon , 9/7/10 8:33 PM

Now that Wawa beat Murray, perhaps this has done wonders to his confidence!!!

Monalysa , 9/7/10 8:41 PM

Not so fast Monalysa, Wawa has just lost the 2nd set.

I don't see what the big deal is about Wawa beating Murray, their h2h was 5.2, and their matches have always been very close.

nadline , 9/7/10 9:21 PM

And to think Wawa had the upper hand in the 2nd!

Monalysa , 9/7/10 9:21 PM

SamQ has won 90% of his first serve points. Over 3 LONG sets (~17 service games so far), that's quite a commendable statistic!

stu , 9/7/10 9:54 PM

If this match carries on to 5 tie-break sets, I don't see Rafa's match starting before 2am UK time, because Venus is on after this, and that could on for about 2 hrs.

nadline , 9/7/10 10:09 PM

maybe Rafa will get his wish and be made to play on the grandstand, nadline :)

stu , 9/7/10 10:11 PM

Alleeeeez Stan...
Such lovely person... unfortunately he is Swiss... so he has to live in shadow...
But he's generaly such nice guy...

zare , 9/7/10 10:23 PM

Yeah, i kinda like Stan too! I will be gald for him if he can pull this off!

Monalysa , 9/7/10 10:42 PM

maybe Rafa will get his wish and be made to play on the grandstand, nadline :)

stu , 9/7/10 10:11 PM

You never know. I doubt that it will happen, because people have paid to see Rafa on Ashe.

nadline , 9/7/10 10:56 PM

Bit of a marathon now ...

smr , 9/7/10 11:23 PM

Whoever wins this will be zonked, one look from Rafa and they will fall over. I know, I know I've jumped a match..

deuce , 9/7/10 11:31 PM

Funny deuce.
They've both upped their games a bit now ... with the finish line in sight.

smr , 9/7/10 11:44 PM

great effort by both! now bring on rrrrrrafa!

stu , 9/7/10 11:54 PM

Stan the Man toughs it out! Bravo! Bit sad for Sam.
