Fellow Spaniards Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer are slated to highlight Tuesday afternoon play at the US Open. The seeds are vying for a place among the final eight in New York.
Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco will be looking to post his seventh career victory over 10th seed David Ferrer on Tuesday. The 26-year-old leads 6-4 in the head-to-head series, although the players have not contested a hard-court match since 2004. The compatriots have split two meetings in 2010, with each competitor securing a win on clay.
Verdasco earned passage into the round of 16, having taken down an in-form David Nalbandian in round three. The Madrid native struck 35 winners en route to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 success over the 31st-seeded Argentine.
The World No. 8 is 40-16 entering into the US Open fourth round. He remains on course to advance to his second quarterfinal in New York.
World No. 12 David Ferrer made the fourth round after defeating countryman Daniel-Gimeno Traver in straight sets. The 28-year-old completed the 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-2 match with all service games held.
Ferrer heads into the round of 16 with a 45-16 record for the season. He is bidding for his first US Open quarterfinal since 2007.
Prediction: A risk-taking Verdasco may struggle to remain patient while playing a retriever like Ferrer. Should be a competitive match, with Verdasco moving on in five sets.

Ferrer was taking it to Verdasco ... but Fernando broke back in the 7th game. Wish I were there watching this one.
