World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is set to continue his bid for a career slam on Tuesday, as he faces fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the round of 16. The players are contesting their eighth career meeting.
Top seed Rafael Nadal holds a 5-2 series edge heading into his fourth-round clash with compatriot Feliciano Lopez. The pair last met this year at Queen’s Club, where a quarterfinal meeting went to Lopez in straight sets. Nadal is 2-0 on hard-court, having secured both victories in straight sets.
The World No. 1 has not surrendered serve through three rounds of play at the US Open. The 24-year-old is 55-7 entering into the round of 16, following straight-set wins over Teymuraz Gabashvili, Denis Istomin and Gilles Simon.
With a successful effort Tuesday evening, Nadal moves into his third consecutive US Open quarterfinal. The Mallorcan remains on course to book his 13th quarterfinal berth in 2010.
Twenty-third seed Feliciano Lopez passed into the round of 16, following the retirement of third-round opponent Sergiy Stakhovsky. The 28-year-old had led by a set and 4-0 when Stakhovsky called it a day with a right toe infection.
Lopez has compiled a 25-18 record this season. He is bidding for his first US Open quarterfinal.
Prediction: Nadal for the win in straight sets.

sals3 , 9/7/10 12:14 PM
VAAMOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSS!
LOPEZ!!!
bjawad , 9/7/10 12:44 PM
Ha Ha so childish with all these retaliations, as if they can win simply by us shouting out our support here. BTW the chance of Sod beating Fed is much higher than Lopez beating Rafa. We shall see.
luckystar , 9/7/10 2:00 PM
Rafa seems to bring out the best in his opponents, among them in his countrymen, who dream to beat him. I think, Feliziano Lopez played at Queens against Rafa much better than against others.
I want to believe that this time Rafa's brightness prevails. Go and shine, Rafa, Number One of the Tennis Universe ! Vamos!
Augustina08 , 9/7/10 2:28 PM
@luckystar , 9/7/10 2:00 PM
Professonal tennis-players play in front of an audience, it is like playing in a sport-theatre. It means that their playing is meant to bring out emotions in spectators & in their fans. Posting here is one of the possiblities to express emotions, if a fan can't go to a stadium - a tennis-theatre.
Augustina08 , 9/7/10 3:07 PM
I understand that there is star named after Rafa.........well if thats the case, Rafa US Open 2010 is YOUR time to shine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
VAMOS!!!
Monalysa , 9/7/10 3:29 PM
Augustina08, please refer to bjawad's post on 9/7/10 12:44 PM to get what I mean. So you think bjawad really is a Lopez fan? More likely bjawad is anti-Rafa! That's why bjawad wished for Lopez to beat Rafa, hence the 'VAMOS Lopez'. My post was directed right at bjawad's!!!
luckystar , 9/7/10 3:48 PM
People, by the way, not meaning to go off topic here, WHERE IS RICKY? Not heard him after Andy's loss!!!!
Monalysa , 9/7/10 4:06 PM
monalysa-its not just ricky. all the "experts" seem to have disappeared.
tj600 , 9/7/10 4:38 PM
@ tj600...............lol!!!!.........hehehehe!!!!!
Monalysa , 9/7/10 4:42 PM
Yes Monalysa, I was looking forward to some feedback on the expert picks, but it appears that none is forthcoming.
nadline , 9/7/10 4:51 PM
Someone had asked (on another thread) if Ricky was posting under the guised of goochrules lolz...was it Monalysa or grafight? can't remeber who'd asked it.
@bjawad ------> clearly a hater bwahahahahaha
Raindrops , 9/7/10 5:08 PM
I want to see Feli do well also ... I want to watch good tennis.
smr , 9/7/10 5:14 PM
Yeah, I want Feli to do well also, BUT not well enough to beat Rafa!!!!
VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Monalysa , 9/7/10 5:16 PM
I just want Rafa to win, if he is winning it will be good tennis.
There are 2 more matches to come on after wawa/querry before Rafa/Lopez, so It could be another 5 hours before Rafa comes on court. Why did they pack so many matches on the same court. They may move one of the ladies' matches to Louis Armstrong.
VAMOS!
nadline , 9/7/10 11:18 PM
Monalysa I'm with you there. :)
smr , 9/7/10 11:28 PM
Shame Rafa and Feli aren't playing a little earlier ... the two of them make for excellent prime time 'viewing'. ;)
smr , 9/8/10 4:14 AM
vamosrafa I don't know if you are up yet ... but rafa did it ... 135mph!
smr , 9/8/10 5:17 AM
Hi all,
I know it's still very early in the match but how is Rafa looking???? I'm at work and can't watch the match :(
cal23 , 9/8/10 5:34 AM
wohooo Nadal 4-1. He saved 5 breakpoits on that last game, so Rafa's SERVE STREAK still intact.
Vamos !!!
Raindrops , 9/8/10 5:36 AM
So far the two lefties exchanging good rallies. Feli's backhand slice works fine against Rafa's forehand. Feli has got 4 chances to break at game 5 as Rafa fell 0-40 and another one after it gone duece but Rafa tighen up his grip and shut the door.
.... and now Rafa took the first set 6-3
Vamos !!!
Raindrops , 9/8/10 5:48 AM
@smr, yeaaaaa he finally blasted the 135 mph serve :D :D , 137 next target (fed's fastest ever is 136 mph LOL) ..
vamosrafa , 9/8/10 5:50 AM
haha uncle toni cover his wrist with his jacket, he got too a tourbillion watch hahaha
Vamos Rafa, keep pummeling !!!
Raindrops , 9/8/10 5:56 AM
Thanks for the update Raindrops. I'm just watching the points turn over on the scoreboard and don't know whether Rafa won the point or Feli lost it.....
cal23 , 9/8/10 6:08 AM
and Nadal breaks again to go up 3-2 at the second set.
Wohoooo !!!!
Vamos !!!
Raindrops , 9/8/10 6:14 AM
@cal23, rafa is serving well again ..lopez is a lefty and a diff playrer because he rarely drives through his backhand , so rafa isnt that aggressive with the forehand as he normally has been in the tournament so far but still hitting the ball well...the bakhand seems to have got the confidence back ! good sailing so far..
arrgh i have to attend a class in 10 mins :@ hate it
vamosrafa , 9/8/10 6:18 AM
I too am at work so can't watch. Tnx guys for describing the match progress.
phoenix , 9/8/10 6:34 AM
Vamos Rafa!!!
natashao , 9/8/10 6:39 AM
Rafa 2 sets to love. Hope he wraps it up in 3.
VAMOS!
nadline , 9/8/10 6:47 AM
"really don't see how Nadal is going to fail to complete the career Grand Slam."
guess who just tweeted that???
vrael , 9/8/10 6:49 AM
i'm going to try to put that in blog form, as opposed to Tweet form, if I have time tomorrow
RickyDimon , 9/8/10 7:06 AM
haaa...ok
vrael , 9/8/10 7:07 AM
Nadal breaks.
nadline , 9/8/10 7:12 AM
verdasco next..
vrael , 9/8/10 7:13 AM
6.3 6.4 6.4 Well Done Rafa.
I'm going to bed now, stayed up all night, it's 6am BST., but Rafa was well worth it.
VAMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSS!
nadline , 9/8/10 7:18 AM
What a great match from Rafa: 30 winners and only 14 UEs. Really amazing!
VAMOS RAFA!
natashao , 9/8/10 7:23 AM
Nadal getting better, his best match of the tournament.
ROS was working brilliantly today.
Verdasco is a tricky opponent. but I expect Nadal to raise his level even further in the QF.
atul1985 , 9/8/10 7:24 AM
It was pleasure to watch two handsome men playing good tennis. I am happy that Rafa's skills and charm prevailed. Vamos, Rafa!
Augustina08 , 9/8/10 7:36 AM
It is really a privilege watching Rafa on the court regardless of the surface.
He is a great champion both on and off the court. It was a sleepless night but he's worth it. Now it's Nando time, he can easily overcome tired and injured nando I believe. vamos rafa......
arwen , 9/8/10 7:55 AM
arwen-
What injury has Verdasco got? I was unaware of this.
isabeau77 , 9/8/10 8:22 AM
He was having a lot of ankle problem at the back end of last season and there was talk of him needing surgery. Dont think this ever happened so maybe it is a recurrence of the same injury. Just guessing.
I am utterly fed up. Started watching Nando/Ferrer but fell asleep and didnt wake up until it, AND Rafa's match, were over. Sounds like I missed two great matches. What's more there are no replays on French TV.
Congratulations Nadline for making it through the night!! I've lost count of how many all-nighters I've managed since the start of Toronto - clearly too many.
ed251137 , 9/8/10 9:13 AM
@ed,what country do u live in?
guys rafa is playing even better than he was at OZ open 09 , i dont think any one can stop the matador now, he is going to reach the final without dropping a set.
'courts dont suit him' heyy what courts? this is all crap ..rafa can win anywhere against anybody else....
61 straight service holds, average speed of 1st serves quicker than fed, cloacking the fastest serves of his career every match , hitting FLAT forehands often, hitting bakhands in any direction with penetration, and executing deft volleys...
what further evidence do we need to show rafa is more confident than ever before?!!
vamosrafa , 9/8/10 10:02 AM
vamosrafa: I'm English but live in France and we are 6 hours ahead of NY time which means the evening matches dont even kick off till 1.00am for me. Watching 11 hours tennis from 5pm through to 6.00am the next morning is taking its toll!!!
But nothing will stop me from watching every minute of Rafa's matches from now on even if I have to take 'uppers' to keep awake.
I cant wait to see that smile on his face when he finally lifts that trophy.
ed251137 , 9/8/10 10:32 AM
Work keeps me from staying up all night for Rafa's matches. It's a good thing that this Sunday is Eid holiday so I can watch the match whatever the schedule is.
Go for it Rafa!

Vamos.
