  • Soderling takes on Montanes in fourth-round action

    9/6/10 7:25 AM | Ricky Dimon
Soderling takes on Montanes in fourth-round action Clay-court specialist Albert Montanes improbably finds himself in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Monday. In order to reach the quarterfinals, however, he will have to upset Robin Soderling.

Robin Soderling and Albert Montanes will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they battle for a quarterfinal spot at the U.S. Open on Monday afternoon. Soderling leads the head-to-head series 2-1, with Montanes' lone win coming via retirement three years ago at Roland Garros. They most recently faced each other in the third round of this year's French Open, resulting in a 6-4, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 Soderling win.

Montanes would do well to make this one anywhere close to as competitive, as he is the essence of a clay-court specialist. The 23rd-ranked Spaniard has done extremely well to reach the fourth round of a hard-court Grand Slam, especially considering he lost his first two sets of the tournament. Montanes battled back to beat Michal Przysiezny, then dominated Carsten Ball before getting a retirement from an exhausted Kei Nishikori. The No. 21 seed is now an impressive 31-17 for his 2010 campaign and is poised to break into the Top 20.

Like Montanes, Soderling also needed five sets to get through his opener. The fifth-ranked Swede just barely survived Andreas Haider-Maurer in round one, but has since destroyed both Taylor Dent and Thiemo De Bakker. Soderling, a two-time French Open runner-up and quarterfinalist at Wimbledon this summer, is a stellar 39-14 for the season.

While the stats and past history suggest this one could be close, that will almost certainly not be the case. Soderling should be able to hit right through Montanes on a fast hard court and the favorite's advantage on serve should be hard to overcome. Count on Soderling cruising in straight sets.

Not so fast! Federer, if he gets past Melzer, will find Soderling waiting for him!

And then Djokovic. I guess we won't see the 'dream final' on this slam...
