Gael Monfils is set to square off against fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet in round four at the US Open on Monday. The players are vying for a berth in the quarterfinal.
Seventeenth seed Gael Monfils will be looking to break a 2-2 series tie with round of 16 opponent Richard Gasquet Monday afternoon. The pair last met in 2009, where Monfils recorded a 6-4, 6-3, semifinal victory in Metz.
Monfils heads into the round of 16 with a 28-14 record in 2010. The 24-year-old overcame a tough opening to the US Open, having battled to outlast qualifier Robert Kendrick in five sets. The Frenchman recovered to post back-to-back, straight-set wins against Igor Andreev and Janko Tipsarevic, who ousted 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick in the second round.
Monfils will attempt to secure his first berth in the US Open quarterfinal on Monday.
World No. 38 Richard Gasquet aims to post his 30th victory of the season. The 24-year-old has efficiently made his way through the draw, earning three-set wins over Simon Greul, 6th seed Nikolay Davydenko and Kevin Anderson.
The Frenchman has held all but three service games en route to the round of 16. Gasquet remains on course to reach his first US Open quarterfinal.
Prediction: Very close match to call. A slight edge to Gasquet, who has shown more consistency this week.
