Fernando Verdasco is scheduled to meet a resurgent David Nalbandian for a place in the US Open round of 16. The Spaniard is joined in third-round action by compatriot Feliciano Lopez, who faces Sergiy Stakhovsky.
(8) Fernando Verdasco vs. (31) David Nalbandian
Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco will be looking to post his second career-victory against David Nalbandian on Sunday. The Spaniard leads 1-0, having won their only previous battle four years ago at Wimbledon.
Verdasco is bidding for his 40th victory of the season. The 26-year-old endured a rough beginning to the US Open, as he rallied to defeat first-round opponent Fabio Fognini in five sets. The Madrid native enjoyed an easier second round, where he took down qualifier Adrian Mannarino in three.
Verdasco remains on track to make his third US Open round of 16.
World No. 33 David Nalbandian survived a scare in the opening round, having held on to outlast Rik De Voest in five tough sets. The 28-year-old Argentine made the third round after taking out second-round challenger Florent Serra, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2.
The Washington champion looks for his first round of 16 berth since 2005.
Prediction: Promises to be a cracker, with Nalbandian prevailing in four sets.
(23) Feliciano Lopez vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky
Twenty-third seed Feliciano Lopez overcame a determined Benoit Paire in the second round, 6-4, 6-7(4), 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-2. The Spaniard holds a 24-18 season mark heading into his match with New Haven title-winner Sergiy Stakhovsky. The 28-year-old, ranked World No. 25, aims for his first US Open round of 16 since 2007.
World No. 36 Sergiy Stakhovsky rallied from two-sets-to-one down during his second-round match with American qualifier Ryan Harrison. The 24-year-old hit 58 winners en route to a 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) victory in four hours and 13 minutes of play.
The Kiev native, competing in his second US Open, will attempt to secure his 25th win of the season Sunday afternoon.
Prediction: An in-form Stakhovsky for the (slight) upset win in five sets.

Verdasco takes the first 6-2. The longer this goes on, the more it favors Fernando. I think the Spaniard is going to take this one in 3
