Big-serving Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey will be back in action at the U.S. Open on Sunday. They are set for meetings with Mikhail Youzhny and Nicolas Almagro, respectively.
(12) Mikhail Youzhny vs. (18) John Isner
Isner was questionable to even suit up for this U.S. Open due to a severely sprained ankle that he sustained two weeks ago in Cincinnati, but the 6'9'' American suddenly finds himself in the third round. Isner, enjoying his best season on tour and not just because he played the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon, is up to No. 20 in the world thanks to a 31-18 campaign in 2010. So far at the U.S. Open he has taken out Frederico Gil and Marco Chiudinellu, the latter in four tight sets.
Confronting Isner on Sunday is Youzhny, who won their only previous encounter 6-7(8), 6-1, 6-3 at last year's Montreal Masters. The 14th-ranked Russian is in the midst of a similarly stellar year, having compiled a 32-14 record. Youzhny waxed Andrey Golubev is his U.S. Open opener before rolling over Dudi Sela. This could be one of the more entertaining clashes of the tournament, but Isner will have the crowd behind him as his ability to win free points on serve should be the difference after five sets.
(20) Sam Querrey vs. (14) Nicolas Almagro
Querrey and Almagro will also be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they meet in third-round action on Sunday. Their only previous encounter came last season in Auckland, where Querrey dominated 6-3, 6-2. That also came on a hard court, which definitely gives Querrey an advantage against the Spaniard. Almagro has always done his best work on clay courts, but he has always been solid at the U.S. Open and he already owns a pair of fourth-set tiebreaker victories this week, first over Potito Starace and then over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Looking for a return trip to the U.S. Open fourth round after losing to Robin Soderling at this stage last year, Querrey has dismissed Bradley Klahn and Marcel Granollers. The 22nd-ranked American, who fell to Rafael Nadal in the 2008 fourth round, is an outstanding 37-18 for the season and he owns four ATP titles. Based on current form, surface, and a home-court advantage, Querrey has every reason to win this one. Look for him to get the job done in four sets.
